Religious Community and Modern Statehood

The passage from the Ottoman empire to modern states

The conference aims to explore various aspects of the communal organization in the Ottoman Empire for regions such as Asia Minor, Middle East and the Balkans, and to present the changes that occurred within the religious communities during the 19th century and particularly during the period from Tanzimat reforms until the First World War. Key questions in relation to the modernization process of the Ottoman state and the functioning of religious communities, are a) how does the Sublime Porte understand the process of structuring a modern state with respect to religious communities, b) who is responsible for the modern institutions: the state or the religious communities, c) what is the reaction of the religious communities regarding the modernization process d) why and in what way the religious communities are changing on the light of this process.

Un colloque international réunira les 2 et 3 septembre prochains à l’université de Liège une vingtaine de conférenciers venus du Québec, de Belgique, de France et des États-Unis pour discuter des moyens permettant d’encourager la participation politique et citoyenne des jeunes. Certains participants seront des chercheurs universitaires qui travaillent depuis de nombreuses années sur ces questions, alors que d’autres seront des responsables institutionnels, des personnes engagées, des jeunes qui viendront témoigner de leurs expériences. L’inscription à ce colloque est gratuite.

Inscrivez-vous à la journée d'étude organisée par le pôle Gouvernance de la Maison des sciences de l'homme en Bretagne qui a pour thème en 2010 : « La gouvernance à l'échelle métropolitaine des villes françaises ». À travers l'exemple des villes bretonnes, il s'agit de questionner le développement territorial des métropoles (le matin) et leurs enjeux politiques (l'après-midi). Cette journée rassemble des chercheurs, des élus et des techniciens qui discutent des nouvelles modalités issue du volet Métropole de la réforme des collectivités territoriales.
