Victorian persistence: text, image, theory

The present-day globalization of Victorian writing can be traced back to the extraordinary plasticity of its textual and visual forms, as it travels from place to place and media to media. Such temporal, geographical, cultural and intermedial persistence is to be the subject of a seminar which will consider the different modes of resistance of literature within the nineteenth-century as well as its survival and rebirth in later times. -

Seminar Machines and Imagination, 2012-2013
Throughout the nineteenth century the astonishing technical success of electricity had a great impact on the contemporary imagination. The Volta’s battery which impressed Napoleon, the telegraph system that linked Europe and United States and later the electric light and the x-rays fascinated not only physicists but also artists, men of letters and eclectic intellectuals. The lightning that gives life to the doctor Frankenstein’s creature in the Mary Shelley novel is the most known case. But also the photographs representing Duchenne de Boulogne’s studies of human facial expressions produced via electrical stimulation and the ‘futuristic’ arc lamp painted by Giacomo Balla are emblematic examples of reactions and interactions between technical development and artistic creativity. The aim of the seminar is to explore how, in a period that was later defined the age of electricity, both science and arts contribute to the representation of electrical technologies. -

The idea of academic "discipline" has a long and venerable history, reaching back to the Renaissance and beyond. But the term "discipline" with the meaning of "branch of knowledge" or "department" only started to come into common use from about 1850. Nowadays interdisciplinary studies in law and literature extend well beyond the limits of universities and law colleges. In most English-speaking countries lawyers and judges have frequent recourse to literature in their pleadings or judgments. The theoretical phenomena described by Cardozo, Posner or White have now given rise to practical applications by academics, lawyers and judges alike. -
Arabian Humanities n°2 – Free Articles Section
Arabian Humanities is an International Journal of Archaeology and Social Sciences focusing on the Arabian Peninsula. It is the continuation of the Chroniques Yéménites, which was the first peer-reviewed academic journal on Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa published by the CEFAS between 1993 and 2011. Its editorial board is calling for papers for the Free article Section of the 2nd issue of the journal, devoted to Towns and urbanization in the contemporary Arabian Peninsula and scheduled for Autumn 2013. -

On Contemporary Writing in the Arabian Peninsula
Depuis la fin du XXe siècle, la production littérature de la Péninsule s’est affirmée sur la scène littéraire arabe comme un acteur incontournable du devenir de la littérature arabe, à la fois par ses écrivains, ses structures de légitimation et l’évolution du lectorat présent dans cette région. La contribution de certains pays comme l’Arabie saoudite et le Yémen est notable. Elle a parfois fait oublier l’activité littéraire d’autres pays de la Péninsule et les publications prévues porteront sur l'ensemble de la production des pays de la péninsule Arabique. -

Autrefois société pré-industrielle dans laquelle la distinction entre culture d'élite dominante et culture populaire subalterne survécut plus longtemps que dans d'autres nations européennes, l'Irlande a néanmoins toujours été caractérisée par l'hybridité. La lutte politique pour l'indépendance s'accompagna de la sacralisation d'un certain genre de « culture populaire », entendue au sens de la culture du peuple d'origine, qui fut par la suite promue au statut de culture dominante. Aujourd'hui, la mondialisation de l'économie et de la culture irlandaises ont transformé cette dernière en une marque publicitaire connue internationalement, détournée et exploitée par les industries culturelles du néo-capitalisme libéral. On peut se demander ce qui rend la culture irlandaise si attirante aux yeux du monde entier : est-ce sa réputation de soit-disant authenticité ? Son enracinement supposé dans un contexte local ? Ou encore le romantisme attaché à un passé de souffrance et de lutte ? -

Plus précisément, ils révèlent une ampleur qui mérite réflexions et échanges en termes de récit, de poétique et de symbolique. Ainsi, que peut nous révéler l’évolution à la fois diachronique et synchronique des liens qui se tissent entre littérature et radicalisme ? Est-ce que le radicalisme rime nécessairement avec l’engagement politique, l’affichage d’une tendance révolutionnaire marquée, ou est-ce que des marques textuelles, des mouvements, des courants, intrinsèquement littéraires, ne peuvent pas être considérés comme radicaux en soi ? -

Habitually characterised as a late-appearing variant upon the Victorian Quest Romance, The Lost World in fact marked the beginning of Arthur Conan Doyle’s prolonged investigation of science, ideology and belief under the inhibiting constraints of early twentieth-century modernity. The narratives span from 1912 to 1929 and this new collection will be dedicated to re-evaluating the narratives, their author, the wider culture that he inhabited and the legacy of his work for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We are interested in work that treats the texts either directly or tangentially through other aspects of Conan Doyle’s life and thought. -

The theme for this year’s Critical Legal Conference is “Gardens of Justice”. Although the theme may be interpreted in different ways, it suggests thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment, created for specific purposes, at a certain distance from society and yet as an integral part of it. The theme also invites you to think about justice as a concrete metaphor rather than an abstract concept. Just like any ordinary garden, legal institutions affect both people working in them and people who are just passing through their arrangements. -

Grammar and genre: interfaces and influences
This symposium aims to study the interfaces between grammar and genre: the purpose is to investigate how genre affects grammatical choices. How are genre distinctions reflected in grammar, be it for example literary vs. media genres, or distinctions such as argumentative, informative, persuasive, expressive, or narrative genres? Is a specific genre belonging to a particular domain, e.g. sport news vs. economy news, characterized by certain grammatical choices? Possible genre distinctions are various, and both empirical questions related to the theme and more theoretical implications and reflections thereof are welcome. -

Southern Horrors. The Dark Side of the Mediterranean
Alternative perspectives on the Mediterranean world in North Europe and America
« The Mediterranean is the human norm. When men leave that exquisite lake […] they approach the monstrous and the extraordinary ». Cette opinion, formulée par un personnage de A Passage to India illustre à merveille, ce que fut, portée à son paroxysme, la « passion de la Méditerranée » dont John Pemble traita dans un de ses livres. Cependant la fascination dont les Européens du Nord (et un peu plus tard les Américains) firent montre, très tôt, pour « ce lac exquis », fut rarement assez forte pour que, venant d’un contexte politique, culturel, social très différent, ils ne découvrent pas aussi du « monstrueux » et de « l’anormal » sur les rivages de la Méditerranée. Mais si la beauté, la vitalité, la spiritualité, la sensualité des sociétés méditerranéennes vues du Nord ont fait l’objet d’études nombreuses et fouillées, on s’est moins systématiquement arrêté sur ce que des « peuples sévères à qui l’hiver convenait bien », pour reprendre un jugement de Charles Kingsley, devaient inéluctablement trouver de sombre en celles-ci. C’est cet envers où dominent cruauté, décrépitude, ignorance et oppression que ce colloque se propose d’explorer plus avant, non pas tant pour rechercher la « vérité » sur les « horreurs » du Sud méditerranéen que rapportent et décrivent (parfois imaginent) les écrits et les arts du Nord que pour tenter de cerner les conditions historiques, culturelles, sociales, esthétiques, personnelles qui dictèrent leur perception (ou leur invention) et inspirèrent leur représentation. -

Dans le cadre du projet de recherche OPVS ("Old Pious Vernacular Successes), financé par le conseil européen de la recherche de novembre 2010 à octobre 2015 (www.opus.fr), un colloque est organisé au sujet des identités textuelles au cours du Moyen Âge tardif. Celui-ci se tiendra à Lausanne en février 2013. -

L'histoire de l'art est-elle suffisamment globale pour relever le défi du transnational, sans négliger pour autant les processus de territorialisation et de nationalismes culturels ? L'approche spatiale et cartographique peut-elle la renouveler ? Autour d'Artlas (artlas.ens.fr), le colloque de Purdue (West Lafayette, USA, 27-29 septembre 2012) invite les chercheurs à réfléchir aux stratégies possibles pour étudier les processus de circulation et de globalisation, sans laisser de côté les questions d'ethnicité ou de nationalité, échappant ainsi autant aux limites de la simple narration qu'à celles d'un globalisme aveugle.
