The Seventh Century: Continuity or Discontinuity?
The 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium
We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium, 28-29 May 2013. The colloquium is a two-day interdisciplinary conference for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The colloquium brings together scholars from different disciplines studying the seventh century in order to promote discussion and the cross-fertilisation of ideas. We will explore how wider perspectives can be used to formulate new approaches to source material, drawing out fresh perspectives on both the familiar and unfamiliar. Our general theme will be an examination of whether the seventh century can be studied as a unit across regions or whether the period represents a break in the longue durée. What was the level of discontinuity between the "long sixth" and "long eighth" centuries? -

The Face of the Dead and the Early Christian World
The theme chosen for this meeting is the study of funerary images in the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central question will a reflection on the function of the funerary images in a broad sense, but also their impact on the early christian world. The choice of the chronological time also shows the second intention of the colloquium: this is an attempt to explain why the ancient funerary tradition of the image will eventually disappear, replaced by other figures of the representative functions. Through various media - from the mosaic and painting, through sculpture and ending with gilded glasses - there will be presented one of the nodal representation of the self: the human face on the border between life and death. -

James Zebedee, the "translatio" and the Jacobean pilgrimages
7th International Colloquium Compostela
The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages. As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella. -

Charming Intentions: Occultism, Magic and the History of Art
This two-day graduate conference will investigate the intersections between visual culture and the occult tradition, ranging from the material culture of "primitive" animism, through medieval and Renaissance depictions of witchcraft and demonology, to the contemporary fascination with the supernatural in popular culture. -

Histoire rurale vs histoire environnementale ? (Moyen Âge – époque moderne)

L’université de Toulouse 2 – Le Mirail et le CNRS organisent, avec le soutien de l’European Society for Environmental History (ESEH), l’Association des Journées Internationales d’Histoire de l’Abbaye de Flaran et le FRAMESPA (UMR 5136), une première école d’été d’histoire rurale. Cette manifestation scientifique se déroulera sous le patronage de l’European Society for Environmental History (ESEH).L’école d’été accueillera des chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, doctorants et post-doctorants, français et étrangers, travaillant sur les sociétés rurales et l’histoire environnementale de l’époque médiévale et moderne. L’organisation prendra en charge l’essentiel des frais de déplacement et l’intégralité du séjour. Des places sont disponibles pour les jeunes chercheurs. Les dossiers doivent être envoyés avant le 28 mai 2012. -

Une table ronde internationale réunira les 3 et 4 mai 2012 à Montpellier une quinzaine d'historiens autour du thème « Repenser l'histoire de la famille dans l'Islam médiéval ». Les actes de cette table ronde seront publiés dans le cadre d'un dossier spécial de la revue Annales Islamologiques, 47, 2013. -

Le scribe d’archives dans l’Occident médiéval

L’historiographie continue de nous dispenser une image assez figée des « scribes » médiévaux, qu’il s’agisse des moines à l’œuvre dans le silence du scriptorium, des notaires toujours au four et au moulin, des clercs de chancellerie produisant des actes à la chaîne dans des ruches d’écriture officielle... Quelle part de réalité dans ces images d’Épinal ? Il s’agit de se demander qui écrit au Moyen Âge, plus spécifiquement dans le domaine foisonnant et méconnu du document normatif ou pratique destiné à faire archive. Quels sont les profils de ces scriptores – scribes, scripteurs, écrivants, « scribouillards » de toutes espèces – au service des grands princes ou des petits seigneurs, des officiers de justice ou des cours foncières, des grands ordres monastiques ou d’humbles collégiales, des autorités urbaines ou des communautés villageoises ? -

De l’(id)entité textuelle au cours du Moyen Âge tardif (XIIIe-XVe siècle)
Dans le cadre du projet de recherche OPVS ("Old Pious Vernacular Successes), financé par le conseil européen de la recherche de novembre 2010 à octobre 2015 (www.opus.fr), un colloque est organisé au sujet des identités textuelles au cours du Moyen Âge tardif. Celui-ci se tiendra à Lausanne en février 2013. -
Ding, ding, ting. Objets médiateurs de culture. Espaces germanophone, néerlandophone et nordique
Le colloque propose de croiser les fils de deux traditions théoriques, la théorie des transferts culturels, élaborée par Michel Espagne et Michael Werner dans les années 1980, qui a donné lieu ensuite à divers prolongements (histoire croisée, recherche sur les phénomènes de circulation, de réseau, d’interculturalité, d’hybridation…), et celle des Material Culture Studies.Il s’intéressera aux objets matériels, d’un point de vue historique, culturel, ethnologique, anthropologique, littéraire, linguistique, philosophique ou esthétique, dans leurs manifestations concrètes et leurs représentations discursives, visuelles, plastiques, ou textuelles, dans la mesure où ces objets circulent entre plusieurs cultures, entre deux pays (ou plus) des espaces néerlandophones, nordiques ou germanophones, du Moyen Âge à nos jours. -

The Max-Planck Institute for European Legal History invites scholars to participate in the debate concerning "The Apostolic See and the World. Challenges and risks facing global history". The debate will be published in the next issue of the Institute’s journal – Rechtsgeschicht –, set for release at the end of this year. -

An international team consisting of ten young researchers seeks five new collaborators to for a project entitled « Intercultural transmission of intellectual traditions in the Middle Ages and the early modern period: a comparative study ». The participants are expected to take part in two working symposia in Poland as well as to write a scholarly article in English dealing with a chosen case of intercultural transmission to be published in the collection of texts that is going to be the main result of the project. The participants will receive remuneration in the amount of 3500 PLN (approx. 1000 USD) together with reimbursement of their travel and accommodation during the symposia. PhD students in all disciplines of humanities are invited to submit their applications by 10 February 2012. -

Les troisièmes journées d’informatique et archéologie de Paris (JIAP 2012) auront lieu les 1 et 2 juin 2012 à l’Institut d’art et d’archéologie, grand amphithéâtre, de 9h 30 heures à 17h 30. Les thèmes retenus pour les JIAP 2012 : « La révolution de la 3D en achéologie : acquisition laser, photomodélisation, réalité virtuelle et augmentée ». Une session sera consacrée aux ontologies en archéologie. -
