The Centre for Social Studies (CES) –Associate Laboratory– of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, has an open competition to two Post-Doctoral Grants within the scope of the project “ALICE - Strange Mirrors, Unsuspected Lessons: Leading Europe to a new way of sharing the world experiences” (alice.ces.uc.pt), funded by the European Research Council (269807), under the supervision of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, in social sciences.

Les évolutions des administrations de l'environnement en Europe et aux États-Unis

In 2007 a new French “Ministry for sustainable development” was created, a "super Ministry" which houses the functions of the former Ministries of Environment, Energy, Housing, and Transport under one single roof. This merger applies to all levels of government, with the creation of large regional services for sustainable development. This mode of reform does not seem to be specific to the French case. At first glance, it echoes the concerns for more coordination and integration which have been already observed in several other countries including Germany and the United Kingdom. This workshop aims to compare different national situations regarding environmental administrations and their impact on public policies.

New Patterns, Realities and Pitfalls

The workshop will analyse the interaction and the interpenetration of nationality, ethnicity and identity through the problematic of transnationalism, globalization and nation-state perspectives. The workshop will be supplemented by practical visits to local communities. Participants are invited to consider the theoretical debates and issues in differing local areas with a variety of social practitioners and representatives to gain further insights of demographic, economic, philosophic, legal and socio-anthropological approaches.

Esta chamada de artigos propõe-se reunir contribuições que, pela compreensão da crise ambiental contemporânea, utilizem criticamente os instrumentos de análise provenientes das seguintes áreas de investigação: justiça ambiental, saúde coletiva, democracia/cidadania ecológica, economia ecológica, ecologia política, ecocriticismo, sociologia ambiental e história ambiental.

Processos de memória política: Roménia e Portugal em diálogo

Os regimes ditatoriais aprisionam, raptam, espiam, torturam e matam. Os crimes praticados pelos regimes totalitários são dos mais diversos; das formas leves de coerção - restrições à liberdade de movimento e expressão, expropriação, negação de serviços públicos - até genocídio. Tais abusos dão origem ao ódio moral, ao ressentimento e à indignação para com os agressores, e destes em relação aos testemunhos e às vítimas. Uma vez os regimes autoritários chegados ao fim, as instituições são confrontadas com o legado duma história recente de medo e opressão e com uma série de perguntas cruciais. Este passado deveria receber uma voz ou deveria ser silenciado? A raiva das vítimas deveria ser contada ou suprimida? As contas com o passado devem permanecer fechadas para manter a paz ou devem ser acertadas para fazer justiça?

Contestation et participation dans le monde anglophone

The dissent and uprisings that spread through the Arab world during the Spring of 2011 occurred almost a quarter of a century after the fall of East European political régimes that saw the rise of "democracy" modeled on the Anglo-American representative system. This specific context which has come to characterize the past quarter of century calls for a renewed analysis of the models these political systems represent and of the processes that triggered them and led to their long-term establishment in the UK and the US.Since the 1990s, as a response to the story of the inevitable emergence of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War, researchers on North American politics have provided an alternative reading of events: that of a "contested democracy".

Les transformations sociales, économiques et politiques induites par le vieillissement de la population ouvrent un vaste chantier de recherche. La question de la dépendance ou de la vulnérabilité, de la consommation de soins et de services, du vieillissement au travail, de l’aménagement urbain et de la citoyenneté des personnes âgées sont des problèmes sociaux et politiques d’actualité mais qui suscitent encore peu de travaux. Ce colloque tentera d'explorer quelques unes de ces pistes.
