Seminar Machines and Imagination, 2012-2013
Throughout the nineteenth century the astonishing technical success of electricity had a great impact on the contemporary imagination. The Volta’s battery which impressed Napoleon, the telegraph system that linked Europe and United States and later the electric light and the x-rays fascinated not only physicists but also artists, men of letters and eclectic intellectuals. The lightning that gives life to the doctor Frankenstein’s creature in the Mary Shelley novel is the most known case. But also the photographs representing Duchenne de Boulogne’s studies of human facial expressions produced via electrical stimulation and the ‘futuristic’ arc lamp painted by Giacomo Balla are emblematic examples of reactions and interactions between technical development and artistic creativity. The aim of the seminar is to explore how, in a period that was later defined the age of electricity, both science and arts contribute to the representation of electrical technologies. -

Anthropology, Culture and Cognition. Freud, a century after Totem and Taboo
Although hardly avoiding intense criticism by anthropologists such as Boas and Malinowski, Freud’s theories did, however, have a profound impact upon anthropology, receiving an enthusiastic reception among Culture and Personality theorists during the middle decades of the 20th century. Leading anthropologists of this trend relied on Freud’s contributions to develop approaches based on the relationship between culture and personality, expanding their views on the importance of culture in personality formation, on the constitution of culture patterns and on the formulation of national character. One hundred years after the publication of Totem and Taboo (1913), this two-day seminar seeks to address the influence of Freud’s legacy in contemporary anthropological thought. It also aims to explore the new interface between the two disciplines, namely through the recent work produced on kinship and on the cognitive approaches to the study of religion. -

How did individuals' geographical mobility contributed the circutation of knowledge in East Asia (16th-20th centuries)? In China, Korea and Vietnam, the bureaucratic systems dictated a specific mode of mobility of the elites. But the ways in which individual itineraries shaped the circulation of knowledge need to be studied not only for civil servants, but also for various socio-professional groups, such as the scholars privately employed by high officials, craftsmen, medical doctors, traders, Buddhist monks, and emperors themselves. To these groups should be added the actors of the globalisation of knowledge during this period. -

Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. The climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. -

Court medical practitioners changed in numbers, occupations and functions during the Renaissance and early modern period (15c-18c) practitioners focused on different specialities within body-care, and took on different roles in the government of Europe’s states. Building on recent work that has concentrated on the history of body care at courts, this workshop will explores changes in court medical politics, practices and practitioners and the consequences they had for, firstly, medical thought, regulation and practice and, secondly, the activities, management and evolution of early modern states. -

Visibility Matters: Rendering Human Origins and Diversity in Space and Time
The conference aims at bringing together scholars from various disciplines who work on the visualization of human origins and diversity. A particular focus will be on the diagrammatic forms of representation. Strategies of diagrammatic representation typically employ a series of textual, symbolic, and pictorial elements. Such strategies may include, among others, specific ways of subjectification; the serialization, spatialization, and temporalization of data; the storage of standardized data sets; and staging techniques of protagonists, events, and processes, notably in the architecture of exhibitions, parks and museums, and through the medium of film and animation. -

Spaces, Knots and Bonds: at the crossroads between early modern "magic" and "science"

If comparison between national or regional contexts has been a driving force for the historiography of the « industrial revolution », and if environmental history has been immediately written on a global scale, the evolution of environmental and risk regulation is often studied according to the national, regional or local scales of the institutions producing the regulations. The aim of this workshop is to invite historians to consider how comparison could advance our understanding of the different ways of regulating risk and environment. -

Puericulture, Biotypology and "Latin" Eugenics in Comparative Context
This One-day Workshop is organised by the History of Race and Eugenics (HRE) Research Group Oxford Brookes University. The study of eugenics and race is currently undergoing a remarkable transformation - one defined by society's need to engage with scientific advances and the ethical dilemmas they raise on the one hand, and the investigation of hitherto neglected case studies on the other. The inclusion and juxtaposition of national and international histories of race and eugenics lies at the heart of this international collaboration that strives to not only yield original and timely research on these neglected national case studies, but to redefine and diversify the overarching debates on these particularly turbulent periods of modern history. -
