The Centre for e-Research (CeRch) is seeking a Research Developer in dynamic web development including implementation of front-end interfaces. The Researcher will work across two major European Commission funded research infrastructure projects: the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) (www.ehri-project.eu) and Data Service Infrastructure for the Social Sciences and the Humanities (Dasish) (www.dasish.eu) projects. Her/his role will be to analyse research practices and translate and implement these in a Virtual Research Environment and research registries.

The Seventh Century: Continuity or Discontinuity?

The 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium, 28-29 May 2013. The colloquium is a two-day interdisciplinary conference for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The colloquium brings together scholars from different disciplines studying the seventh century in order to promote discussion and the cross-fertilisation of ideas. We will explore how wider perspectives can be used to formulate new approaches to source material, drawing out fresh perspectives on both the familiar and unfamiliar. Our general theme will be an examination of whether the seventh century can be studied as a unit across regions or whether the period represents a break in the longue durée. What was the level of discontinuity between the "long sixth" and "long eighth" centuries?

Dispute between Philosophers or Dispute over Philosophy?

Debates over Moral and Political Philosophy in the 17th Century

L’étude des querelles de philosophie qui ont durablement marqué l’époque moderne, à un moment (le XVIIe siècle) où la question de la méthode de découverte et de démonstration de la vérité se trouvait reprise à nouveaux frais, est susceptible de faire apparaître la mise en place de modèles alternatifs, irréductibles aussi bien à la forme scolaire de la disputatio qu’à la forme dialogique ou dialectique du débat humaniste, et dépassant par ailleurs le cadre du seul affrontement polémique. Pour essayer de cerner ces formes émergentes de la dispute à l’époque moderne, notre colloque se propose de limiter le champ de réflexion aux querelles d’ordre moral et politique, plus à même de rendre possible la généralisation d’un nouveau mode de codification de la dispute que ne le feraient les querelles spécifiquement métaphysiques ou physiques.

Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. The climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards.

Au croisement du linguistique et de l’éducatif, du social et du politique, le Séminaire doctoral international réunit chaque année des enseignants-chercheurs et de jeunes chercheurs concernés par l’appropriation et la transmission des langues et des cultures. Conçu comme un outil de formation à la recherche, à l’initiative du monde académique, au bénéfice des professionnels impliqués dans la diffusion et l’enseignement des langues, fondé sur l’échange scientifique entre jeunes chercheurs, universitaires et experts confirmés, en présentiel, par un dispositif de visio-conférence ou par une plate-forme d’échange, le Séminaire propose d’engager la réflexion scientifique internationalisée par un programme incitatif comportant des conférences plénières de chercheurs de premier plan issus de champs disciplinaires complémentaires et des ateliers consacrés à la présentation par les jeunes chercheurs de leurs travaux. Les langues de travail sont le français et l’anglais.

L'étude empirique et quantitative de la géographie religieuse est un sujet nouveau, auquel le développement constant d‘outils techniques et conceptuels promet de nombreuses opportunités. Depuis la prise en compte de la dimension spatiale dans l'étude du religieux, le « tournant spatial », nous avons beaucoup à apprendre des mécanismes spatiaux du changement religieux. Et, bien que des progrès notables aient été accomplis sur la question de la géographie religieuse, de vastes perspectives s’offrent encore à la recherche, notamment pour l'analyse spatiale de données religieuses avec les méthodes formelles : un champ nouveau et prometteur est ouvert.

Les ordres monastiques réformés en Europe du Nord, 1100-1600

En 1113, David, le plus jeune fils de sainte Marguerite d’Écosse, établit à Selkirk dans le Sud de l’Ecosse une colonie provenant de l’abbaye de Thiron-Gardais fondée par saint Bernard de Ponthieu. Ce fut le premier établissement d’un ordre de type bénédictin réformé fondé dans les îles Britanniques. L’arrivée de ces moines continentaux marqua le début d’une ère de profonds changements religieux, politiques, culturels, sociaux et économiques dans les pays situés à la bordure septentrionale du monde christianisé, depuis l’Écosse et l’Irlande à l’ouest à travers l’Angleterre, la Scandinavie et l’Allemagne du Nord jusqu’en Pologne et l'Estonie à l’Est. Afin de célébrer le 900e anniversaire de cet événement, l’université de Stirling accueillera une conférence pluri-disciplinaire (du 10 au 12 juillet 2013) afin d’explorer l’impact monastique sur la culture et la société de l’Europe septentrionale du XIIe au XVIe siècle ainsi que son héritage moderne.

Il s'ensuit que seuls les étudiants de nationalité française peuvent prétendre bénéficier d'une bourse Besse. Pour l'année 2012-2013, Exeter College (www.exeter.ox.ac.uk) offrira la bourse avec un poste de lecteur français, dont la rémunération totale sera de £10,000. Ceci inclut une bourse de £3000 et la rémunération pour une charge d'enseignement de langue française de 6 heures par semaine. Le boursier sera logé dans le Collège à titre gratuit, et bénéficiera de quelques dîners à « High Table ».

“Ri yo avan yo riw”: Rebellion and Compliance of Womanhood in African-Diasporic Milieu

As defined by Hirsh, postmemory: “describes the relationship of the second generation of powerful, often traumatic experiences that preceded their births but that were nevertheless transmitted to them so deeply as to seems to constitute memories in their own rights” (2008). Applied to the African Diaspora, one may suggest that slavery and colonialism constitute a postmemory directly determining the approach to self of all members of the African Diaspora. This postmemory is so ingrained in these societies that the post-conflict backlash generally affecting women from former colonised or occupied countries, has hit African-Diasporic women in an extremely unusual way. In fact, it has been witnessed in several middle Eastern or South American societies that after liberationist conflicts, some societies would create a fantasised notion of womanhood allegedly pre-colonial, rejecting the former dominant culture to glorify their own root culture (Al Ali, Pratt 2007; Pankhurst 2007). In African-Diasporic milieu and in the same post conflict context, women were fed with dreams of European respectability of which the European middle class woman was archetypal. This rather complex situation generated great uneasiness as far as identity and womanhood were concerned. Beyond the debate around Négritude, Créolité and even Modernity, black women are yet to fit the general notion of “whut a [black] woman oughta be and to do”.Indeed, One can wonder at the ability of the new generation to fulfil the dream of respectability of its mothers (Burton, 1997) while complying with the demands of an increasingly neo-liberal environment. Coupled with the Festival Image of Black Women, this conference will be the opportunity to discuss the discrepancy between the image, the representation and the realities of African-Diasporic women. The aim is to identify the postmemories responsible for the social expectations of womanhood in a given community and how these expectations protect or injure the same women.
