Les villes morcelées : quelles approches alternatives pour la rénovation urbaine ?
Tackling Urban Fragmentation. Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration
This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation. -

Franco-British history seminar (2012-2013)
Le séminaire franco-britannique d’histoire est organisé depuis 2000 à l’Université Paris IV, maintenant en partenariat avec l’Institute of Historical Research de Londres (qui propose les communications en podcasts sur son site web) et le Groupe d’histoire intellectuelle de l’université Paris VIII. Il accueille tous les ans une série de chercheurs britanniques et français pour une présentation de leurs travaux récents sur l’histoire générale du monde britannique en histoire médiévale, moderne et contemporaine. Il est ouvert aux étudiants de master, doctorat et à tous les chercheurs intéressés par ces thématiques.

La thématique générale tourne autour des révolutions britanniques et de la manière dont les chercheurs français se sont saisis de cette question, dans les domaines de la philosophie politique, de l'histoire des sciences et du genre et de l'histoire sociale. Des discutants anglais et français viendront commenter ces effets de divergences et de convergence observés de part et d'autre de la Manche. -

Contestation and Participation in the English-speaking World
The dissent and uprisings that spread through the Arab world during the Spring of 2011 occurred almost a quarter of a century after the fall of East European political régimes that saw the rise of "democracy" modeled on the Anglo-American representative system. This specific context which has come to characterize the past quarter of century calls for a renewed analysis of the models these political systems represent and of the processes that triggered them and led to their long-term establishment in the UK and the US.Since the 1990s, as a response to the story of the inevitable emergence of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War, researchers on North American politics have provided an alternative reading of events: that of a "contested democracy". -

La journée s’interrogera sur cette période particulière de l'histoire de la mode et des femmes, en questionnant à la fois, les dispositifs de création et de représentations des modes, du point de vue français et anglais. -

Rails and urban development. A Comparative Approach between France and the United Kingdom
In France as in the United Kingdom, the issue of sustainable development along with preoccupations about energy costs are leading developers and urban planners to put rail transport at the centre of their concerns. Despite this similar context and though development in both countries has in general been strongly linked to rail, the relationships between urban development and rail transport seem to be quite different. France has seen a strong development of its tram networks since the beginning of the 1980s, whereas in Britain the revival of light rail systems has been more modest. On the other hand, the emergence of urban ‘railway star’ networks to service the peripheries of large cities has been more pronounced in Britain. Yet the role of major transport projects is a crucial issue in both countries in the metropolitan strategies of large urban areas like London and Paris.To comparatively explore the issue of railway transport and urban development the universities of Paris 1 Sorbonne and Liverpool are organising two linked seminars. The first of these will take place in Paris in May 2012, and consider the (re)development of LRT and tramway systems. The second seminar will be held in Liverpool in Autumn 2012 and address the issue of links between territorial development and railways. -

Ce séminaire propose d’étudier l’émergence des risques et accidents industriels en Europe de la fin du XVIIe à la fin du XIXe siècle (principalement en France et en Angleterre). Il s’agit de rassembler des problématiques souvent disjointes (techniques, économiques, juridiques, médicales, urbaines, etc.) dans une compréhension globale de leur leur incidence sur nos sociétés. En tant qu’objet d’étude à part entière, ils sont étudiées dans toutes leurs dimensions : prévention, action, réparation… Il s’agit de suivre la chaîne chronologique, philosophique et logique du risque et de l’accident, pour mieux éclairer la mise en place de notre civilisation industrielle. Le séminaire privilégie ainsi la question de l’économie de l’accident industriel, entendu dans un sens très large, où peuvent être analysés les dialectiques prévention / réparation, régulation par la loi / par le marché, savoirs et expertise / décisions politiques, économie / écologie, ou encore techniques et organisations / responsabilités humaines. Cette histoire croisée de longue durée de la chaine systémique de l’accident industriel se décline en plusieurs axes : 1) Politiques de régulation, économie et techniques ; 2) Assurances et politiques d’indemnisation ; 3) Secours et soins. -
