  "Changing the Tune": Popular Music & Politics in the XXIst Century

  From the Fall of Communism to the Arab Spring

  Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

  A conferência internacional "Portugal-Brasil: um olhar atual" irá realizar-se dias 12 e 13 de setembro de 2012, no ISCTE-IUL, por ocasião do Ano do Brasil em Portugal e de Portugal no Brasil, com o objetivo de fazer uma análise do presente e do futuro das relações entre os dois países em vários domínios, estimulando o conhecimento mútuo e a descoberta de oportunidades de cooperação.

  En proposant de s’intéresser aux rapports entre politique et cinéma, cette section thématique vise à aborder un champ de recherche original encore peu défriché en science politique tout en se situant dans le prolongement des publications de dossiers d’ores et déjà consacrés à cette question notamment dans les revues Politix en 2003 et Raisons politiques en 2010 et de l’utilisation par de nombreux politistes de films pour leurs recherches ou leurs enseignements. Elle s’organise autour de trois axes, abordant le film tour à tour comme outil d’observation du politique, puis comme analyseur du politique et enfin comme source d’explication du politique.
