The workshop is dedicated to questions linking transnational public participation research with transnational social movement activism research and pointing to dynamics of global spread, professionalization and standardization. It aims at discovering linkages, differences and ambiguities in both research fields and invites contributions from diverse disciplines.

Interdisciplinary strategies and collaborations

This seminar is the first of a series of three talks which will take place in each of the cities explored. It offers a space for collaboration, reflection and exchanges where explorers, partners, associate members and other leading figures are invited to lend an outside perspective. It is an invitation both to reflect on the project itself and to promote a public discussion of its critical perspectives. For instance, what is “knowledge” for an artist, a researcher or an educator, and how is it constructed ? For what discourse and representations are artists, researchers in the humanities and educators responsible ? What research stance should be adopted to meet the challenges of interdisciplinarity and social space ? How do our disciplines of research, creation and social intervention revisit the historical motive for exploration and what relationship do they have with it ?

The last thirty years have seen the burgeoning of political and academic speeches on the merits of participative or deliberative democracy. In parallel, in occidental democracies, various systems sharing the ambition to strengthen or increase citizen participation through collective discussion on public issues are being institutionalized. These devices are often viewed today as a novel cure to the present crisis of representative governance. This panel, at the crossroads of sociology, history and political science, aims at historicizing such deliberation necessity and at redrawing the genesis of the phenomenon as speech and political practice.

This 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar will be held at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT). Continually facing new demands from epistemological or technical society, and now facing an economic and social crisis (especially in Europe), urban planning is forced to question its methods. The Seminar is intended for PhD Students who wish to present their ongoing research questioning aspects of the field of urban planning in a historical perspective, from a theoretical point of view or with a potential for practical implementation. The U&U International PhD Seminars take place exclusively in English and seek to promote the exchange of ideas, provoke debate amongst researchers, invite comparisons, cross-pollinate different disciplines and to highlight the latest ongoing research. The Mosaic of Urban Identities

For the conference "Cultural Encounters. The Mosaic of Urban Identities" we want to invite papers from scholars in any field of research who want to share their disciplinary insights in the matter with colleagues from other disciplines. How is multiculturalism in urban settings treated in their disciplines, what challenges and opportunities do they see? And how do they differ from or enhance the views we encounter in the media or in political or ideological debates? Ambiance and Atmosphere in Translation

After "Ambience and Urban Practices", and "Ambience and Criticism", this third meeting of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche funded project "Enigmas of contemporary urban mobility”, organized within the framework of the International Ambiances Network, will develop a conversation between ambiance, atmosphere and translation. But how to translate? If translation is understood as a practice of "linguistic hospitality", as an experience of transition and mediation, what form might translation take? How might, in other words, the transition occur between the "daily" word and the word of the "expert", between that of the "living" and that of the "foreign"? How to make shareable experiences beyond the singularity expressed in different languages and cultures? What media or combination of media could help us achieve this?

The 2013 conference theme, "States in Crisis," is an opportunity to ask and answer a broad range of questions about the contemporary state, from its role in and reactions to economic and fiscal crises to the way in which its contours have or have not adapted and changed in concert with the modern economy to its place as a bulwark against or a catalyst for the construction of more market-driven societies.
