Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city
This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18th and the 19th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

Environmental approaches of interactions between cities and forest supplies during the Middles Ages and the Early modern period. 12th International Conference on urban History, European Association for Urban History – Main Session M16
As places of consumption and production European medieval and early modern cities exerted a enormous pressure on neighbouring woodlands. Some historical studies have already discussed the way cities tried to impone their control on these lands emphasizing the diversity of needs which were fulfilled by forest exploitation (wood, timber, charcoal, grazing…). They often concluded that urban pressure resulted in an inexorable degradation of the forest cover. Indeed local woodlands and forests products could probably never meet the demand. In order to face shortage or, better, to prevent it, urban authorities attempted on one hand to extend their control on more and more distant forests and to attract interregional or « international » trade flows. On the other hand, they tried to regulate the local market so as to ensure access to several important needs regarding urban economy (charcoal, timber).

The Church and the City, 50 years after the II Vatican Council
50 years after the II Vatican Council a time series analysis of what has been done so far in the field of architecture can be attempted: the number of interpretations given to the Council directives regarding both architecture and urbanism should be approached in a critical way, as well as their relevance today. Through practical examples, the purpose of the seminar is to think about and investigate the role of the Church in the complex urban reality of today. Starting from the assumption that the much debated issue of the Church identity directly refers to need of the Christian community to identify itself in the architectural forms, the main theoretical and methodological topic of the seminar will be the study of the different ways in which ecclesial communities can express themselves and find their identity today, always keeping in mind the multiculturalism which shapes the European cities today more than ever before.

EAUH 2014, Session 12
The session "City Lights" is organized within the framework of the 12th international conference of the EAUH (European Association for Urban History) which will take place in Lisbon from the 3rd to the 6th September 2014. It is part of the studies on night, a dimension which has been long neglected in urban history. The session proposes to study in a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective (in history, geography, planning, sociology and environmental studies) the evolution of night-time and street-lighting practices in the world from the XVIIth century up to the present: from the increasing demand in public lighting in european capitals to the protection of the night sky and energy savings.

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

DfD – Design for Desertification
The main aims of this International Conference are to gather articles and presentations that can contribute to enrich the debate on territorial consequences of rural-urban migration, depopulation and desertification. One of the consequences of several years of migration from rural to urban areas in Portugal, as it leaves the villages in the interior of the country depopulated, is cultural genocide. Design for Desertification is a research project that contextualises these issues within the Portuguese territory showing how economic decline, desertification and depopulation are interconnected and how rural development could present a solution to economic decline.

Vingt-cinquième conférence du réseau European Network for Housing Research

Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration

Ambiances & Atmospheres in Translation
Many authors, from the second half of the nineteenth century onwards, have struggled to implement a sensitive approach to urban modernity. How to be attentive to changes in the urban world and the minute variations of the ordinary? From the aesthetic thought of Simmel to Goffman’s ecological approach, the philosophies of everydayness in anthropology, from Laplantine to Kracauer and White, to Wittgenstein, Bégout, and Rancière, work has described, translated and called into question the role of ambiance and atmosphere in the construction of urban life. Coalescing around notions of ambiance or atmosphere, notable research trajectories have interlaced disciplinary concerns within urban studies, cultural geography, sociology and architecture, especially in relation to interconnected concepts such as affect, place, aura, and ecology. Rarely, however, have these trajectories actually met or collided.
