Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city

This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18^th and the 19^th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

1st East and West Conference on Translation Studies

This conference aims to provide a biannual forum for East and West dialogue on Translation Studies. This inaugural edition will be dedicated to “Translation History Matters” and welcomes contributions addressing issues related (though not circumscribed) to translation history, historiography and metahistoriography. Centred on translation understood as an intentional phenomenon of human and mostly intercultural communication, this conference aims to focus on the role played by translation in Eastern and Western cultural practices and encounters through history as well as on the role of history to understand both translation and translation studies. By bringing together Eastern and Western views on a multitude of translation history matters, this conference aims to stress why, how and for which purposes translation history matters.

Even if human scientists and business executives like to argue otherwise, the human sciences have always been in-corporated. Without them, the modern business corporation would simply have been unimaginable, just as the production and consumption of working bodies within these corporations. ‘The Firm’ continues to frame itself as a fundamental human enterprise, in which the prominence of human ressources and human relations only continues to increase, yet the humanities of the business corporation largely remain to be written.

Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert / L'expertise médicale aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

Current Trends, Challenges and Crises

Fala-se cotidianamente de crise do ensino jurídico, a reboque da permanente crise das próprias instituições do Sistema de Justiça. Essa crise da educação também não é de hoje: Em “A Educação Jurídica e a crise brasileira”, texto extraído da aula inaugural dos cursos da Faculdade Nacional de Direito proferida em 1955, San Tiago Dantas expôs a decadência de um modelo alimentado pelas classes dirigentes, desconectado das necessidades básicas da sociedade. Dizia San Tiago Dantas: “Quem percorre os programas de ensino das nossas escolas, e sobretudo quem ouve as aulas que nelas se proferem, sob a forma elegante e indiferente da aula-douta coimbrã, vê que o objetivo atual do ensino jurídico é proporcionar aos estudantes o conhecimento descritivo e sistemático de instituições e normas jurídicas. Poderíamos dizer que o curso jurídico é, sem exagero, um curso de institutos jurídicos, apresentados sob a forma expositiva de tratado teórico-prático”. Na mesma senda, Rui Barbosa, no início do século passado, denunciava o tradicional método de ensino jurídico como fator proibitivo do próprio processo de aprendizado.

Climat et temps : la science comme culture publique

Communication scientifique et son histoire – III

This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.
