Framing (post)modernity
CECC, The Research Centre for Communication and Culture, announces the 4thGraduate Conference in Culture Studies, Irony: framing (post)modernity, which will take place at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon on the 23rd and 24th of January 2014. This conference wishes to bring together doctoral students and post-docs working within disciplines that relate to the study of culture (arts, humanities and social sciences), and that seek a forum for prolific debate.

Academy as Community: English and American Studies in Portugal and Europe
34th APEAA Meeting
The tradition of English and American studies in Portugal has long been supported by the dynamics of academic associativism, in which APEAA’s peer network stands out, involving national and international institutions, and establishing continued interactions with research centres. At a time when political and cultural paradigms are on the verge of crisis and/or change, it is of the utmost importance to revisit the theoretical and pragmatic frameworks that sustain (and constrain) our research practices. Thus, this conference aims to provide a forum to discuss how Anglo-American scholarship, with its vocation for plurality and innovative interdisciplinary proposals, may progress. We also want to build strategies of cohesion among our peers in order to better disseminate our contribution to the interpretation and the fruition of meaning(s), valuing a plurality of cultural and aesthetic manifestations.

Multimodal Communication : Language, Performance and Digital Media
The event wishes to bring together contemporary artists and researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines, working within different theoretical and methodological paradigms in a creative, internationally oriented, and stimulating atmosphere. The importance of multimodal communication and creativity is now generally recognised by researchers from either the Humanities, Information Technologies or Cognitive Science. This conference therefore offers an opportunity to present and learn about research findings concerning human behaviour and agency in different types of communication and their cognitive, cultural, narrative, technological, social, textual or discourse functions.

The V Congress of the APA will host an ethnographic film screening, in sessions that will be held in the small auditorium of the Teatro Municipal de Vila Real on September 8, 9, 10 and 11. The (non-competitive) festival’s theme, ‘Anthropology in Counterpoint’ focuses on films which demonstrate the polyphony and multiplicity of points-of-view that characterizes the anthropological project. Anthropology is a pluralistic undertaking, comprising a variety of modes of knowing and systems of knowledge. -

II conferência internacional de cinema de Viana
A Conferência, organizada pela Ao Norte – Associação de Produção e Animação Audiovisual, pelo Centro de Migrações e Relações Interculturais (CEMRI) – Laboratório de Antropologia Visual, da Universidade Aberta (UAb), e pela Escola Superior de Educação, do Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (ESE – IPVC), ocorre no âmbito dos XIII Encontros de Cinema de Viana. O evento é um espaço de reflexão e de partilha de experiências visando a construção de uma comunidade internacional de interesses e de divulgação de projetos relacionados com quatro temáticas centrais do cinema – Cinema e escola, Cinema e ciência, Documentário contemporâneo e Cinema: novas narrativas e novas tecnologias. -

Imagens, medicina, arquitectura
Na primeira metade do século XX, diferentes equipamentos hospitalares e sanatoriais foram objeto de estudo, discussão, observação e registo sistemático e comparado por parte de médicos e arquitetos. Foi-se formando em torno destes equipamentos de saúde um novo saber, que poderíamos designar de médico-arquitetónico, numa altura que quer a medicina quer a arquitetura se procuravam afirmar no espaço público enquanto saberes autónomos e especializados. Este novo saber médico-arquitetónico assentou em ciclos de acumulação minuciosa de registos médicos, instruções técnicas, programas, desenhos e projectos de arquitetura, em diferentes imagens gráficas e fotográficas, em peças escritas e desenhadas de construções hospitalares e sanatorias, utilizadas na construção de áreas especializadas de conhecimento médico, mas também na afirmação do papel social do arquiteto. -

Nos 10 anos da Convenção para a Salvaguarda do Património Cultural Imaterial da UNESCO, o Núcleo de Estudos sobre Cidades, Culturas e Arquitetura (CCArq) do Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra, em parceria com a Direção Regional de Cultura do Centro e com a Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro-UNIRIO, encontram-se para debater os rumos das políticas públicas sobre Património Cultural em ambos países.
