  Painting and document : David Diao

  Call for Abstracts for the first international colloquium about the New York painter David Diao. Born in 1943, Diao is a major artist of the conceptual painting field. His work is about the history of modern art, architecture and design but also about the complex interactions between autobiography, history, art market… This colloquium will take place in Museum of modern and contemporary art, Strasbourg. Organized by two laboratories of University of Strasbourg and National School of Archiecture of Strasbourg. The colloquium is part of a series of projects with David Diao in Strasbourg for 2014 : artist residence, edition of a work, collective book, colloquium.

  Changing the Tune: Popular Music and Politics in the XXIst century

  From the fall of communism to the Arab spring

  Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20^th and early 21^st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

  Seeing ghosts

  Si l’on suit les sondages, la rencontre avec des fantômes est non seulement une possibilité largement envisagée, mais aussi une expérience fréquente. Simple écho à la fascination contemporaine pour l’au-delà ? Résurgence d’éléments culturels ayant traversé les sociétés et les siècles ? À travers quelques exemples, nous distinguerons l’approche clinique des "personnes hantées", selon le terme du prix Nobel de médecine Charles Richet (1922), en nous éclairant des travaux récents en psychologie anomalistique sur les facteurs favorisant les expériences de hantise et d’apparition. Voir des "personnes hantées" là où sont évoqués des "fantômes" oblige le clinicien à un positionnement spécifique face aux manifestations d’un insaisissable déréel.

  The Sequence of the looker

  Forms, histories and the functions of illustration through the prism of sequentiality

  Le colloque La Séquence du regardeur marque la deuxième édition de nos rendez-vous strasbourgeois et fait suite au colloque De Traits et d’esprit qui s’est tenu en 2011 et dont les actes paraissent à la veille de ce nouveau rendez-vous. Nous nous proposons d’explorer à nouveau l’illustration dans ses histoires, ses formes, ses usages et dans une acception étendue à la bande dessinée (mais pas uniquement). La manifestation propose d’alterner les communications scientifiques des chercheurs invités avec des rencontres plus informelles entre une personnalité du monde des arts et un illustrateur tout en ponctuant les travaux de propositions plastiques, d’une performance dessinée et de la présentation d’éditions illustrées produites par la nouvelle vague de jeunes illustrateurs.
