Seminário de estudo sobre as circulações artísticas, sociais e culturais na Baixa Idade Média (sécs. XIII-XV)

O Seminário de estudo é organizado pelo grupo de investigação “Construir a História” em colaboração com o grupo de investigação “Imagens e textos medievais” e tem como objetivo debater os movimentos de pessoas, produtos e padrões culturais, artísticos e religiosos nos séculos entre XIII e XV tanto do ponto de vista histórico-religioso como artístico.

CECC, The Research Centre for Communication and Culture, announces the 4^thGraduate Conference in Culture Studies, Irony: framing (post)modernity, which will take place at the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon on the 23^rd and 24^th of January 2014. This conference wishes to bring together doctoral students and post-docs working within disciplines that relate to the study of culture (arts, humanities and social sciences), and that seek a forum for prolific debate.

LxS - Lisbon Summer School in Science, Society and Culture, to be held in Lisbon on September 9-20, 2013, is the summer event of the Pedro Hispano Doctoral Studies Programme, composed of 5 courses, workshops, and a graduate conference. The courses of the 2013 edition of the summer school focus on five research puzzles raised by current societal challenges: language hegemony and migrations, culture and heritage, social inequality, urban dynamics, and climate change.

Practising the good life/The good life in practices

The Call for Papers is now open for the International Conference: Practising the Good Life/The Good Life in Practices, to be held at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal) on October 17th/18th 2013. This will be the first conference in Portugal solely dedicated to Lifestyle Mobilities. The conference is free of charge, but is limited to a maximum of 24 paper presentations, to be delivered in plenary sessions over two days.

Performing Documentation in the Conservation of Contemporary Art

Contemporary art conservation requires a re-assessment of the distinction between the work and its re-configuration in documentation. Although documentation is crucial for the survival of many contemporary works of art, it is never neutral: all approaches, formats, media and systems have their own inherent affordances and blind spots and always transform what they document. Furthermore, in process-centered, technology-based or performative artworks in particular, we often can no longer make a sharp distinction between an original work and its subsequent documentation or replication: documentation is part of the work's very core.

Em Portugal, o processo de urbanização, que tem início na década de 50, atinge o seu auge na década seguinte, entrando pelos “conturbados” anos 70. É a época dos HLM, das New Towns, dos “30 gloriosos” que viriam revolucionar a habitação das massas. Portugal também teve os seus grandes conjuntos de iniciativa pública, poucos. A maioria era privada. Era nas periferias ou nos limites periféricos da cidade que se construíam os “novos bairros”, de habitação coletiva ou de moradias, frequentemente clandestinas.

The International Colloquium “Medieval Europe in motion” is directly linked to the current postdoctoral research projects of Dr. Maria Alessandra Bilotta on «Portuguese juridical manuscripts production and illumination between 14th and 15th centuries and theirs connections with manuscripts production and illumination in the French “Midi” (specially Toulouse, Avignon and Montpellier) and in the North-Mediterranean regions (Italy and Cataluña)» and by Alicia Miguélez on «The gesture language in the Lorvão Apocalypse and its rapports with other beatus manuscripts».

Our goals for the conference are to raise awareness of the artistic exchange and mutual influences between the Han Chinese arts and the arts from different cultural backgrounds in China itself, as well as beyond its geographical and cultural boundaries. We also aim to go through the issues on the construction of artistic identity and the balance between permeability and hegemony, tradition and innovation, convenience and misinterpretation.

O Simpósio internacional de arquitetura "Espaço e Ilusão. Teatros, arquitetura e património na Península Ibérica" pretende abrir um diálogo entre estudiosos e técnicos protagonistas de ambos os países, responsáveis pelo estudo desta temática e pelo projecto e execução de muitas das intervenções recentes em espaços teatrais. O impacto destas realizações na deslocação dos novos equipamentos dos centros (históricos) para novas centralidades comerciais, a recuperação de teatros e auditórios como factores de redefinição do tecido urbano, a importância de novas linguagens e de formas de interacção do público com os espaços, a influência das novas tecnologias nas soluções arquitetónicas e cenográficas, são alguns dos temas a abordar no Simpósio.

Academy as Community: English and American Studies in Portugal and Europe

34th APEAA Meeting

The tradition of English and American studies in Portugal has long been supported by the dynamics of academic associativism, in which APEAA’s peer network stands out, involving national and international institutions, and establishing continued interactions with research centres. At a time when political and cultural paradigms are on the verge of crisis and/or change, it is of the utmost importance to revisit the theoretical and pragmatic frameworks that sustain (and constrain) our research practices. Thus, this conference aims to provide a forum to discuss how Anglo-American scholarship, with its vocation for plurality and innovative interdisciplinary proposals, may progress. We also want to build strategies of cohesion among our peers in order to better disseminate our contribution to the interpretation and the fruition of meaning(s), valuing a plurality of cultural and aesthetic manifestations.

The event wishes to bring together contemporary artists and researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines, working within different theoretical and methodological paradigms in a creative, internationally oriented, and stimulating atmosphere. The importance of multimodal communication and creativity is now generally recognised by researchers from either the Humanities, Information Technologies or Cognitive Science. This conference therefore offers an opportunity to present and learn about research findings concerning human behaviour and agency in different types of communication and their cognitive, cultural, narrative, technological, social, textual or discourse functions.

O Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa vai lançar, em 2013, a segunda série da publicação Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal, que edita desde 1997 e conta já com 10 números publicados. Os artigos que os constituem incluem temas diversificados nas áreas da História e das Ciências Documentais, tendo como referência a documentação à guarda do Arquivo Municipal ou a prática arquivística no que se refere ao tratamento de séries documentais, à sua conservação, digitalização, entre outros.

O Portugal atlântico, europeu e lusófono: uma nação de portas abertas

A presença dos Portugueses no mundo não é mais do que um reflexo de uma certa curiosidade tipicamente portuguesa, misturada com um empreendedorismo aventureiro, uma vontade inata de procurar descobrir onde nos leva o caminho. E, historicamente, o caminho levou-nos para todos os cantos do globo, desde o Oceano Atlântico e Mar Mediterrâneo ao Oceano Índico, do Mar do Sul da China até ao Oceano Pacífico. Estas extensas viagens deram a oportunidade aos Portugueses de interagirem com culturas muito diferente. Mas deram-lhe também uma capacidade incomum para abrir as suas portas a outras culturas, outras formas de viver, de fazer negócios, de comunicar e de construir pontes e caminhos.

Anular o destino”, expressão emprestada do filósofo americano Ralph W. Emerson e citada por Pacheco Pereira num artigo do Público de 24 de novembro de 2012, pareceu-nos especialmente adequada para título deste colóquio, não como obrigação restrita aos intelectuais, mas como uma ação de cidadania global. Num contexto social e político particularmente difícil a arte surge de novo como meio de observação e interrogação privilegiado sobre o mundo, a exemplo do que tem acontecido em outros momentos críticos da história. Com a participação de alguns dos mais relevantes pensadores, investigadores e artistas da atualidade, neste colóquio será analisada e discutida a sempre renovada relação entre arte e política.

O cavalo e o touro na pré-história e na história

Este congresso pretende reunir, com a finalidade de troca de conhecimentos, não só pré-historiadores, arqueólogos e historiadores de arte, mas também investigadores dedicados à mitologia, à utilização militar do cavalo, à história da tauromaquia, à origem e evolução e à criação destes dois mui nobres animais. Ambos surgem profusamente representados nas artes de culturas e civilizações diversas, desde a Pré-História até aos dias de hoje, em exemplos numerosos de arte rupestre, cerâmica, escultura, mosaicos, numismática, arquitetura e pintura, entre outros casos. O cavalo e o touro, que partilham um “tronco” da árvore evolutiva dos mamíferos, estão ainda, ao longo dos tempos e dos lugares, associados a mitologias diversas, surgindo mesmo com características divinas no seio de alguns povos, como é o caso do Boi Ápis, no Antigo Egipto, e dos cavalos de Apolo na Grécia Clássica, entre muitos outros exemplos.

Social sciences, policy developments and social movements

In contemporary Europe, we are witnessing the vanishing of anti-racism from political cultures and academic discourses, in favour of an approach that intervenes on immigrants and minorities themselves via public rhetoric on integration. This conference will thus bring together an international community engaging in debates on racism and anti-racism to discuss the analytical approaches and main findings of the European research project TOLERACE - The semantics of tolerance and (anti-)racism in Europe: public bodies and civil society in comparative perspective, coordinated by the Centre for Social Studies.

Media e o império português (séculos XVIII a XX)

A relação entre os media e o império português é o tema principal da conferência internacional que se realizará a 1 e 2 de Novembro de 2013 em Lisboa. A conferência tem uma base interdisciplinar, acolhendo estudos de jornalismo, comunicação, história, literatura, sociologia, geografia, antropologia e história da arte, entre outros domínios dos estudos humanísticos e das ciências sociais, que contribuam para a melhor compreensão das relações entre os media e a política imperial de Portugal desde o século XVIII até finais da década de 1970.
