Maritime History research: Challenges, Methods and Objects

Over the centuries, the growing and diversified exploitation of ocean resources, the accelerated coastal anthropization, the densification of sea transport which accounts for the major part of exchanges that take place around such hubs as harbors, the regulation and oversight of maritime areas, the ever more numerous missions undertaken by many national fleets, are all signs that development processes are speeding up. All of these aspects reveal that the sea, which sends us a reflected image of the world's evolving activities, is a major stake in the world's transformation while also being threatened by it. This "maritimization" phenomenon calls for renewed historical approaches with a view to identifying its mechanisms with more precision. It is to this particular observation point that the SIG's members have chosen to give priority throughout the conference.
