  Mobility – migration

  Epistemological propositions for the understanding of human displacement

  Mobilité, migration, ces concepts qui désignent des phénomènes a priori distincts de déplacements humains liés à des contraintes ou projets spécifiques sont peut-être plus similaires qu’il ne l’est communément admis. Mobilité s’est  progressivement substituée à migration dans la sphère politique et dans la recherche, illustrant une nouvelle gestion politique des flux de populations et l’intérêt porté à de nouvelles modalités de déplacement caractérisant la globalisation, sans que ce glissement conceptuel n’ait fait l’objet d’un questionnement approfondi sur le sens que les individus donnent à leur déplacement. S’interroger sur ce point doit permettre d’approfondir la réflexion épistémologique sur la manière de définir les individus et les groupes qui se déplacent.

  Ideas in movement: the role of conflict and commerce in the history of navigation

  Following successful meetings in 2010 and 2012, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a third symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation. 2014 sees the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. While this conflict provided a powerful stimulus for research and development in navigation, technological developments have also sprung from users and from commercial imperatives.
