Myths, Rites and Funerals: Dead along the Silk Road (from Ancient and Medieval Worlds to Japan)

This event will fall into two main themes: 1/ the death of the hero or the setting up of the cult of the dead and of the funeral rites in ancient and medieval societies in the Eastern world, the Far East and the Muslim world and 2/ the conduct of funerals and especially the development of rites studied through anthropological practices in Asiatic societies in order to analyze the codification of emotions with gestures, lamentations, elegies, and a number of practices (music, shouts, smells). In other societies, especially in the Muslim funeral rites, emotions are ruled by the Tradition (the hadīths) Yet in practice, the mourners, the cries and lamentations are a constant feature in Eastern societies but in contemporary western one, death has become a phenomenon, if not denied or at least hidden, emotions are channelled through the funeral rites which are managed by professionals.
