1913 : Charles Richet reçoit le prix Nobel de physiologie et de médecine pour sa découverte de l’anaphylaxie. Au-delà de ses travaux pionniers, qui ont ouvert la voie à l'immunologie moderne, Charles Richet reste une figure de savant complexe, véritable synthèse des nombreuses contradictions de son temps : pacifiste et patriote, eugéniste et dreyfusard, positiviste et adepte du spiritisme. L'étude de ses passions pour la construction aéronautique, pour l'écriture littéraire, et celle de ses engagements, feront émerger une figure intellectuelle incontournable du Paris savant de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle.

The 1rst World War dramatically affected societies and territories, as well as personal lives and all forms of culture, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The 1914-1918 conflict had in all respects a foundational nature. On the occasion of the 1rst World War commemorations, and in connection with the exhibition, "Summer of '14: The Last Days of the Old World", which will be held at the French National Library from March 25 to August 3, the French Committee of Cartography organizes a conference specifically dedicated to the role of cartography in the war, according to three main issues : the role of maps during the preparation of the war, the use of maps on the theatre of military operations, the importance of the map in a civil society during the war.

From silicosis to silica hazards: an experiment in medicine, history and the social sciences
What are the biases inherited from the constitution of medical knowledge? How does returning to the root of “scientific truth” open new avenues to contemporary research? The present colloquium is an unprecedented interdisciplinary experiment whereby medical experts, epidemiologists and historians will question the very foundations of current medical knowledge of silica hazards, in order to discuss the unknown origin of a range of systemic diseases.

Ancient christianity and cults around pagan mysteries in the work of Franz Cumont (1868-1947) and in research history
Ce colloque, qui aura lieu du 13 au 15 septembre à Gand, est centré sur la manière dont l'historien des religions belge Franz Cumont et ses contemporains ont conçu la relation entre le christianisme ancien et les cultes à mystères païens. Il s’agira d’une étude large du thème historiographique, incluant aussi ses prédécesseurs et les recherches récentes. Le colloque s’adresse aux spécialistes d’historiographie des religions antiques des XIXe et XXe siècles. Il sera l’occasion de discuter amplement des idées avancées par les diverses traditions historiographiques, méthodologiquement et géographiquement déterminées.

Worker's environments in the 20th century
Between work environment and lived environment: what common ground for environmental history and the history of work?
Au cours de la dernière décennie, l'histoire environnementale a connu un fort développement dans les universités francophones, et l'histoire du travail connaît actuellement un profond renouvellement. Pourtant, peu de travaux lient encore ces deux champs historiographiques. Cette journée vise donc à rassembler des jeunes chercheurs, dont les travaux entendent contribuer à nourrir une réflexion historique sur les liens entre travail et environnement. Elle sera l'occasion de faire un bilan historiographique des travaux récents et des recherches en cours, afin d'esquisser des interrogations communes pour les recherches à venir.

À l'occasion du XVIe Rendez-vous de l'histoire de Blois, le Comité d'histoire de l'électricité et de l'énergie organise sa première école d'automne à destination de jeunes chercheurs affiliés à des institutions de recherche en Europe et dans le monde s'intéressant à l'histoire de l'énergie. Celle-ci prendra place dans un haut-lieu de l'histoire de l'électricité, le centre d'archives historiques EDF, situées à Blois.

Ideas in movement: the role of conflict and commerce in the history of navigation
Following successful meetings in 2010 and 2012, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a third symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation. 2014 sees the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. While this conflict provided a powerful stimulus for research and development in navigation, technological developments have also sprung from users and from commercial imperatives.

Medical expertise in the 20th and 21st century / Medizinische Expertise im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert / L'expertise médicale aux XXe et XXIe siècles. Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

From the academic bookstore of the 19th century to digital knowledge
L’accélération de la circulation des textes et la mutation des relations auteur / éditeur consécutives au développement d’Interne remettent en cause les modèles établis de production et de diffusion de l’écrit scientifique. Le séminaire poursuit l’étude de l’organisation du travail intellectuel (métiers et formes éditoriales) au cours des deux derniers siècles et se concentre dans cette session sur la revue (enquête portant sur un millier de titres français). Sera également questionnée l’évolution des formes éditoriales dérivant de la revue : résumés, sets de données. L’enquête mobilise l’expérience d’historiens du livre, d’historiens des sciences et de professionnels de la documentation, des bibliothèques et de l’édition, impliqués dans les mutations du numérique.

Climate and Weather: Science as Public Culture
Scientific Communication and its History – III
This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.
