Industrial hazards and accidents (late 17th – late 19th century)
Technological accidents question our industrial society; they are an inherent part of the “risk society” concept that scientists, sociologists, geographers and anthropologists have popularised since the eighties. However, in order to step back and take a longer term view, historicization of the concept is necessary. Although historians have also begun to examine this question, they have focused primarily on the most contemporary period during which spectacular accidents have occurred and have sometimes led to disasters. But industrial (or artisanal or mining) accidents occurred throughout the earlier economic development process in Europe. They went hand in hand with the emergence of the industrial society that they helped to create.

The office as an interior (1880-1960)
Au cours de la « deuxième révolution industrielle » augmente considérablement l’activité dans le tertiaire et se développent les services administratifs dans le secteur industriel et public. L’employé devient ainsi la figure sociale de la modernité urbaine, qui témoigne aussi du rôle croissant de la femme dans ce secteur professionnel. Le colloque The office as an interior (1880-1960) aborde l’essor du travail administratif entre 1880 et 1960 à travers l’analyse de l’émergence d´un espace nouveau, le bureau, qui par ses arrangements contribue à la diffusion de nouvelles formes de sociabilité et réalise des nouveaux modes d’organisation du travail.

From silicosis to silica hazards: an experiment in medicine, history and the social sciences
What are the biases inherited from the constitution of medical knowledge? How does returning to the root of “scientific truth” open new avenues to contemporary research? The present colloquium is an unprecedented interdisciplinary experiment whereby medical experts, epidemiologists and historians will question the very foundations of current medical knowledge of silica hazards, in order to discuss the unknown origin of a range of systemic diseases.

The Atlantic World of Anthony Benezet
There is renewed interest today in the study of early North American antislavery, and thus Quakers. Yet the French Atlantic dimension of Quakerism has been left unexplored. We thus found it useful to focus on the Atlantic world of Huguenot Anthony Benezet, a mere schoolteacher and the first antislavery propagandist of modern times. Benezet was born in Saint-Quentin in 1713, then left for France eventually to settle in Philadelphia where he converted to the Quaker faith. His antislavery ideas later had a major influence on Quaker communities in North America, but also other antislavery activists on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean at the end of the eighteenth century.

After Lisbon 2011, the second International Conference Strikes and Social Conflicts will be held at the Maison des sciences de l’homme in Dijon (15-17 May 2013). The conference aims to open new avenues for thinking about social conflicts in a multidisciplinary and global perspective. The proliferation of conflicts all over the world today and the profound redefinition of practices in the era of globalization calls for changing perspectives, for an international opening of our horizons and for precise examination of the diversity of practices and imaginaries mobilized by the protagonists.

História do movimento operário e dos movimentos sociais em Portugal
Este congresso pretende abranger o estudo do trabalho e dos movimentos sociais num sentido amplo. Serão acolhidos trabalhos de investigadores de todas as áreas das ciências sociais, privilegiando-se uma abordagem interdisciplinar que mantenha a componente histórica como essencial no desenvolvimento das investigações, bem como a integração nestes estudos das principais discussões teóricas e debates da historiografia e das ciências sociais contemporâneos. Nesse sentido serão também recebidos trabalhos que versem sobre a historiografia e teoria da história e análise dos conflitos sociais e da história do movimento operário e dos movimentos sociais.

La notion d'emploi dans l'opéra-comique
Dans l’ouvrage qu’ils consacrent à l’Opéra-Comique (2005), David Charlton (Royal Holloway College) et Nicole Wild (Bibliothèque de l’Opéra) recensent plus de 2000 titres d’ouvrages créés entre 1762 et 1972. Le colloque des 20 et 21 février explore un aspect du système de production dans lequel on peut voir une cause de cette productivité et de cette vitalité parce qu’il était au cœur du système : l’emploi dramatique. En des temps où la reproduction mécanique des œuvres n’existait pas, le système de production assurait la permanence du répertoire sur le temps long et accomplissait sa diffusion à l’échelle nationale par la transmission du métier. L’emploi était alors la clé de voute d’un système visant à la création autant qu’à la reproduction du spectacle vivant par un collectif expérimenté et plus ou moins formaté par les emplois.

Depuis l’article fondateur de E.P. Thompson en 1967, les tentatives de mesure du temps de travail et de son évolution ont surtout fait l’objet de recherches novatrices dans le monde anglo-saxon (Voth, 2000 et nombreux autres). Certes, de plus en plus d’études admettent que l’augmentation de la durée du travail, mesuré au niveau familial et non seulement individuel, eut un rôle majeur à la fois dans l’augmentation des productions et dans la capacité de consommation des populations européennes dès l’époque moderne. Mais les études sur le continent restent, d’une façon générale, assez limitées. C’est pour poursuivre et relancer le débat que nous avons déjà organisé à l’Université de Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, deux journées de travail exploratoires. Le but de ces rencontres était de discuter sources, méthodes, hypothèses de travail. Nous avons pu à ces occasions évaluer la fécondité de cette thématique.
