1660-1688: A Landmark Period in the History of British Sociability

1660-1688: un tournant dans l’histoire de la sociabilité britannique ?

Dans le cadre du projet interdisciplinaire « History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832) », la journée d’étude du 14 novembre 2014, organisée par PLEIADE (université Paris 13) et HCTI (UBO Brest) vise à étudier la période de la Restauration à la Glorieuse Révolution (1660-1688) comme une période charnière dans l’histoire de la sociabilité britannique, portant en elle les germes d’une sociabilité nouvelle. Il s’agira d’identifier les facteurs politiques, sociaux, économiques et culturels propices à l’essor de la sociabilité britannique et d’interroger le caractère novateur des formes, des pratiques et des vecteurs de cette sociabilité.

This book will follow an international conference taking place in Rennes (France), November 27-28, 2014, which will gather specialists on issues related to indigenous peoples and regional integration organizations. The conference and the book are directed by Nathalie Hervé-Fournereau (DR CNRS University of Rennes) and Sophie Thériault (Associate Professor, University of Ottawa with the support of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and the french society for environmental law. The conference and the book are part of a larger research and networking project conducted by the Interdisciplinary thematic Network BIODISCEE of the CNRS INEE, with the support of the Centre d’Excellence Jean Monnet of Rennes and the Franco-Canadian research program on Regional Integration Organizations in the world.

The framing of health as a global issue over the last three decades has carved out an intellectual, economic and political space that differs from that of the post-war international public health field. This older system was characterised by disease eradication programs and by the dominance of nation states and the organisations of the United Nations. The actors, intervention targets and tools of contemporary global health contrast with previous international health efforts.

Enjeux, pratiques et influences des acteurs non-étatiques (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle)

La fin de la guerre froide a été l’occasion de (re)découvrir le poids des acteurs non-étatiques dans une diplomatie de plus en plus mondialisée. Selon Richard Langhorne, c’est avec le Congrès de Vienne de 1961 que s’amorce le processus de déliquescence de la diplomatie classique née au XVII^e siècle dans laquelle seuls les États jouaient véritablement un rôle. Cet affaiblissement progressif des États a conduit à l’effacement des frontières traditionnelles entre ce qui relève de l’action diplomatique officielle et des relations internationales plus informelles, menées en marge des États. Le poids croissant de divers acteurs non-étatiques sur la scène internationale est un signe révélateur de cette transition.

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

Images environnementales globales : nouvelles perspectives

La conférence internationale propose de mobiliser une grande variété de perspectives venant d’un large spectre disciplinaire afin d’analyser les stratégies et les imaginaires liés à la production, la circulation et le pouvoir des images environnementales globales. Des icônes du mouvement environnementaliste en passant par les graphiques d’expert mobilisés par le GIEC jusqu’à l’imagerie satellitaire, les images environnementales globales forment la base sensorielle des processus planétaires qui gouvernent l’« Anthropocène ». Les images participent toutes activement, à des échelles très diverses, à notre interprétation et à notre compréhension aussi bien des changements du système Terre que des conséquences que l’on associe étroitement au changement climatique global. En tant que vrais médiateurs entre différents publics et cultures, entre des processus globaux et des impacts locaux, de nouvelles interrogations sur les images environnementales globales conduisent à une discussion hautement productive des relations complexes entre la science, la société, la politique et la nature.

Berggebiete als globale Zulieferer: Neue Formen regionaler Disparitäten zwischen Berggebieten und Metropolregionen

Sozio-ökonomische Berggebietsforschung hat sich in der Vergangenheit zumeist mit der Beschreibung, Interpretation und dem Umgang mit Wirtschaftsschwäche und Bevölkerungsrückgang beschäftigt. Mit dem demnächst erscheinenden Themenheft zu neuen Einwanderern (editiert von Federica Corrado) zeichnen wir ein anderes Bild, das des sozio-demographischen Wachstums. Das neue Themenheft möchte beide Fragestellungen sowohl theoretisch als auch empirisch zusammenführen und damit einen Beitrag leisten zu Risiken und Chancen hochspezialisierter Berggebietsentwicklung. Dabei soll die Frage nach „spatial justice” (Edward Soja, 2010) aufgeworfen und nach potentiellen alternativen Entwicklungspfaden gesucht werden.

Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Les mouvements de massification scolaire constatés dans la plupart des systèmes éducatifs des cinquante dernières années ont considérablement transformé les enjeux liés aux espaces scolaires et éducatifs. On observe une recomposition de ces espaces qui interrogent l’articulation des missions traditionnelles de l’école autour de l’instruction et de la transmission des apprentissages, avec des prises en charge éducatives plus larges qui répondent à de nouvelles problématiques. Ce numéro s'intéresse aux modalités de recomposition des espaces scolaires et éducatifs en rapport avec la prise en charge locale (collectivités locales et territoriales, associations communautaires ou de proximité, mouvements d’éducation populaire…) des problématiques sociales et scolaires qui marquent l'école contemporaine. Dans un contexte concurrentiel où les espaces urbains et scolaires sont de plus en plus hiérarchisés, où les frontières intérieures à l’école se renforcent, où les frontières extérieures sont mouvantes, nous interrogeons les liens entre les ségrégations spatiales, les parcours scolaires et les formes de traitement des nouvelles problématiques éducatives.

Bilan et perspectives

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

Objets en tous genres

The concept of object is one of the most general concepts in philosophy. On the one hand, we may be interested in the general question of what it is to be an object. On the other hand, we face the problem of delineating the criteria of objecthood in connection with specialized topics, giving rise to specific questions on what it is to be an object of a certain kind (such as concrete, abstract, indeterminate, mathematical, etc.) Accepting or refusing things of a certain kind as legitimate objects (of that particular kind) when developing a scientific theory or a philosophical position is likely to have important general repercussions. In our workshop we wish to investigate the notion of object, both generally and in relation to particular fields of research. The emphasis is on the grounds and consequences of specific views on objects.

Islam and Regional Cultures in Pakistan

With the hope of throwing new light on the transformations of Pakistani society, this one-day conference intends to move the focus away from two dominant discourses on Pakistan : that is, on the one hand, the security discourse of political and media circles that reduces Pakistan to a state on the fringe of failure, trying to cope with radical Islam and terrorism; and, on the other hand, Pakistan’s official nationalism, which rests on a unitary conception of the nation that disregards the cultural and religious diversity of the country, stressing instead Islam and Urdu as national unifiers while relegating regional cultures to folklore. This conference hopes to partly fill this gap by inviting participants to illustrate the complex, lived experience of Islam in Pakistan, the identity component of religious practices that do not fit in the dominant norm, and their inscription in local political and ethnic relations. Papers would ideally use first-hand observation and/or analyses of cultural productions to examine circumscribed case studies.

In this third edition of The Conscious Body meetings, we invite academics and dance / performance makers to explore together the inter-subjective space occupied by the performer and spectator. This one day event will also mark the end of the first phase of the labodanse project (labodanse.org) with Myriam Gourfink. Pour cette troisième édition des rencontres Conscious Body, nous invitons chercheurs et danseurs / performeurs à explorer ensemble l’espace inter-subjectif qu’occupent le performeur et le spectateur. Guerre froide et télévision de divertissement

La Guerre froide a eu un impact capital sur les idées et la culture. De nombreuses recherches ont d’ailleurs déjà été menées, notamment sur le cinéma, celui produit aux États-Unis et, de plus en plus, celui d’autres pays, de l’Est comme de l’Ouest. En revanche, malgré quelques exceptions importantes (portant, par exemple, sur les séries de science-fiction et d’espionnage), il existe peu d’études sur la télévision, alors que celle-ci est une technologie et une forme de culture populaire qui s’est développée pendant la Guerre froide. Ce colloque espère combler cette lacune et permettre d’examiner l’impact de la Guerre froide sur la télévision de divertissement. Il s’agit de développer l’aspect comparatif, et des émissions des deux blocs seront donc étudiées – en tenant compte, bien sûr, de l’impact démesuré de la télévision américaine.

Common Experiences, Common Desires ? Tracing an Intellectual History between China and Africa

In his 1954 presentation to dignitaries from across Asia and Africa, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai acknowledged the differences between the two cultural spheres; nevertheless, Zhou stressed, a more important factor in all future relations should be the “common experiences and desires” of people from across the two continents to create a new world from the ashes of war and colonialism. Building on Zhou’s insight into commonalities of experience, this presentation will trace the cultural intersections that have existed between China and African since the 1920s.

Dreamed/planned cities and experienced cities

Congrès annuel de la Commission d’anthropologie urbaine [IUAES]

Nowadays, there is a growing interest among anthropologists to do urban research that looks at both the government of the city and the dwellers' representations of the city (Lefebvre). Many ethnographies have thus focused, on the one hand, on urban policies and, on the other hand, on social practices. The Urban Anthropology Series - published by Ashgate - and the works published in the Journal Urbanities are good examples of this growing trend among anthropologists, which is consistent with the major transformation of cities around the world: gentrification, competition between cities, urban sprawl, mobility, heritagization, etc.. Urbanity is paradoxically claimed as one of the main attributes of Modernity at a time when cities are diluting and disseminating. The aim of this conference is to understand both the dreamed/planned cities and the experienced cities. However, we do not want to oppose those who think the city to those who inhabit and practice it. Everyone is entitled to have personal thoughts about the place where one lives.

Des jeux « traditionnels » aux jeux numériques

Depuis le début des années 2000, l’étude des jeux numériques a pris une place considérable dans la littérature académique consacrée aux phénomènes ludiques, au point où de nombreux articles se proposant de faire un état des lieux des « game studies » actuelles se concentrent essentiellement sur les travaux abordant les jeux sur ce support. Pour questionner les relations qui s’établissent entre jeux « traditionnels » et jeux numériques, cet appel se décline en cinq thématiques qui donneront une vision assez large des différents genres d’articulation envisageables. Tous les types de recherches, fondamentales ou appliquées, et approches disciplinaires sont concernés.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)

Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine

Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.
