Concepts and Praxis of Rapprochement during the 20th Century
Today there are almost 20,000 communal partnerships across Europe. In fact, they have become somewhat of a mass phenomenon since the 1960s. Despite this impressive development, historical research has shown little devotion to this particular form of international relations. Its detailed analysis, however, allows special insight into the participation of “common citizens” in international initiatives and international exchange in a communal setting. The goal of the conference is to depict the history of town twinning by challenging the concept and definition thereof. City partnerships have particularly developed in the context of bilateral rapprochement after the Second World War, the European Integration and the Cold War. Since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, they have also become a symbol for a Europe of civil partnership “from below”. Furthermore, they do not only play an important role in Europe and its relations with its neighbors, but through globalization, ultimately with the rest of the world.

The invalids of the Great War on screen - France/Russia/Germany

Parmi les victimes de la Grande Guerre, les invalides sont ceux qui ont sans doute le plus profondément frappé l'opinion. En France, mais aussi en Allemagne et en Russie, les « gueules cassées », les soldats souffrant de shell shock et tous ceux qui ont perdu un membre à la guerre ont mobilisé la société civile, inspiré les artistes … et souvent été les moteurs des associations d'anciens combattants. La médecine militaire a accompli d'immenses progrès lors des quatre années 1914-1918 : les corps de ces jeunes hommes partis au front en bonne santé ont offert un immense champ d'expérimentation. Dans la tradition déjà ancienne du cinéma sanitaire et médical, les atteintes corporelles et psychiques ont été captées par les caméras, les inventions et les découvertes scientifiques ont été projetées sur les écrans de tous les pays. La lutte contre l'ennemi dans le champ médical – la maladie et la mort – fait l'objet d'une propagande cinématographique aussi intense que celle sur les champs de bataille. Comment filme-t-on en France, en Allemagne et en Russie l'épreuve que fait subir aux chairs et aux esprits la guerre mécanique ?

Conference, symposium - Europe
An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. Cultural diversity and mechanisms of identification
Diversity through the optic of football in France and Germany (1950-2014)
Aspirant à réunir de « jeunes » chercheurs français et allemands, ce colloque se propose de questionner la notion controversée de « diversité ethnico-culturelle », linguistique ou confessionnelle exprimée dans et à travers le football en tant qu’activité et spectacle sportifs. En France comme en Allemagne, le recrutement socio-ethnique des Bleus et de la Mannschaft – qui ont participé à la Coupe du monde 2014 au Brésil – est habituellement présenté par les observateurs de la vie sociale comme un indicateur tangible de la diversification de la « communauté des citoyens ». Alimentant le débat sur l’identité nationale et les mécanismes de l’identification, ce fait invite alors à la comparaison franco-allemande. Or, l’originalité de ce colloque réside non seulement dans l’articulation des échelles d’analyse synchronique et diachronique (1950 à 2014), mais aussi dans l’approche pluridisciplinaire, mêlant la sociologie, l’histoire, la science politique, les sciences du sport et les sciences de l’éducation.

Congrès annuel du Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art
Conclusion et point d’orgue de son thème annuel, le congrès international organisé par le Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art les 26 et 27 juin 2014 à Paris explorera les différentes facettes de la « répétition » dans l’art, dans une perspective diachronique. Processus répétitifs et variantes dans la pratique et l’histoire de l’art seront abordés sous différents angles, allant de l’originel au subséquent, de l’original à la copie ou au modèle : répétition et procédé imitatif peuvent être compris dans un sens ontologique, en tant qu’élément fondateur de la personne humaine, mais également dans une dimension spatiale ou temporelle, en tant que rythme ou série. Les questions de l’inventio ou de l’imitatio impliquent enfin pour l’art une idée d’évolution ou de renaissance, et renvoient dès lors à son intemporalité et à son historicité.

How do we look at the collapse of Communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe today, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall? By choosing 1989 as a starting point of reflection, this conference aims at questioning the way documentary and fiction films contribute to the understanding of both past and historical present and to provide a general overview on the relationship between cinema and post/communist society.

Transnational representations of the flight and explusion of Germans after WWII
Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic
Depuis une quinzaine d’années, les événements de la fuite et de l’expulsion des Allemands des territoires de l’Est à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale occupent l’espace public en Allemagne de façon massive. Le présent colloque souhaite élargir le périmètre de perception de la fuite et de l’expulsion aux pays d’Europe centrale concernés : la Pologne, la République tchèque et la Slovaquie. Si le colloque s’intéresse principalement à la représentation des événements historiques dans la littérature, les arts, les médias, les musées et les expositions, surtout après 1989, il est néanmoins nécessaire d’accorder une place à l’historiographie du temps présent des différents pays concernés, notamment en s’interrogeant sur les nouvelles approches historiographiques. Il proposera également une réflexion sur ces événements dans le sens de la construction d’une mémoire commune en Europe centrale.
