Memoria scientiae 2015: Feeding animals/Eating animals
Theories, attitudes and cultural representations of nutrition in ancient and medieval world
According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.

Etty Hillesum. One hundred years later (1914-2014)
International Conference
Esther (Etty) Hillesum writings are a crucial historical document, as they report on the extreme evil of racial persecutions and life in lagers. They are a reflection on the value and the meaning of life, love and death. The International Conference “Etty Hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014)” (December 9-10, 2014, at Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Italy) aims to assess the works of this important witness from the 20th century.

Spaces in action, actions in space

From Arab springs to the questionning of States
Civil societies faced with the resurgeance of segmentary logics

Between home, family and business
Unpaid family and work obligations for the market from the end of the Middle Ages to the contemporary era

Movement of persons has been a key feature in the whole history of European integration, and the time has come for historians, along with political scientists, jurists, economists, sociologists and demographers, to discuss and draw some conclusions on its evolving conceptions and practical applications, placing both of them in the wider context of the social and demographic transformation of Europe and the political and economic narrative of continental integration.

Symbols and Models of the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean Sea is a milieu in which it is possible to observe, through an interdisciplinary lens, the undertaking of elements defining an idea which conflicts with its immediate sensitive aspect; an idea that arises from life situations and the imaginary world of every man. Nevertheless, it remains a context in which is possible to observe the presence and the constant use of historical symbols, patterns and models of those people inhabiting its shores, as embedded in both the artistic and material production, as well as in the literary one.

Etnografia virgiliana e Italia augustea

Facts and Values in Aesthetics: Contemporary Stakes and Approaches
In a text entitled The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays (2004), Hilary Putnam argues convincingly against a classic opposition which does not serve philosophical reflection positively. Putnam’s analysis mostly focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge, but one can legitimately extend it to other fields, starting with that of aesthetics, which sooner or later is confronted with the question of whether one defends or rejects the dichotomy. Keeping or rejecting it implies reasons to do so, but often these reasons remain implicit, most especially in aesthetics.
