  Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos

  The ‘Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos’ conference explores the culture, economy, and politics of towns and cities based on islands worldwide. It considers common attributes of island cities, the influence of island status on urban development, and how and why different island cities have developed in different ways. Throughout history, islands have been sites of urban development. Physical separation from the mainland, spatial limitations, and maritime tradition facilitate transport of products and ideas, defence infrastructure, construction of social capital, consolidation of power, formation of cultures, and concentration of population.

  Karachi : Ordered Disorder and the Struggle for the City

  With a population exceeding twenty million, Karachi is one of world’s largest ‘megacities’. It is also one of the most violent. Since the mid-1980s, Karachi has endured endemic political conflict and criminal violence, which revolve around control of the city and its resources (votes, land and bhatta—‘protection’ money). These struggles for the city have become ethnicised. In the process, Karachi, often referred to as a ‘Pakistan in miniature’, has become increasingly fragmented, socially as well as territorially.

  L’européanité d’une ville à travers l’espace et le temps

  Association loi 1901, la Maison de l’Europe Bordeaux-Aquitaine, dont l’université de Bordeaux est un membre fondateur, pilote chaque année au mois de mai la Fête de l’Europe. Souhaitant donner à son édition 2014 une dimension académique et universitaire, elle organisera le mercredi 14 mai 2014 en partenariat avec la Bibliothèque Municipale de Bordeaux, une journée d’étude ayant pour thème : « Bordeaux, de la cité à la métropole européenne : l’européanité d’une ville à travers l’espace et le temps »
