  Antiquity and the territory of disparity

  L’Antiquité gréco-romaine nous tend des pièges intellectuels : les termes grecs ou latins, comme theatron, muthos, poiesis, eros, philosophia, fabula, res publica ou pater familias, n’avaient ni le sens ni les emplois que nous donnons aujourd’hui à théâtre, mythe, poésie, érotisme, philosophie, fable, république ou père de famille. L’identité formelle entre les termes anciens d’un côté, français de l’autre donne l’illusion que nous pouvons les utiliser sans précaution, sans traduction anthropologique. Ils ont fini par renvoyer à des concepts anhistoriques, souvent présentés comme des catégories universelles.

  Sources and methods

  Masters seminar: Men, Women, Masculine, Feminine: gender and history

  Dans le cadre de ce séminaire, nous nous proposons de réfléchir à la façon dont les historien(ne)s utilisent la notion de genre pour comprendre comment des sociétés – y compris la nôtre – ont pensé et élaboré la différence des sexes. La thématique de l’année, « sources et méthodes », sera l’occasion de réfléchir sur les pratiques historiennes face aux documents et, ainsi, de souligner l’intérêt du genre comme outil de déconstruction des savoirs présumés évidents ou naturels dans le domaine du sexe, de la sexualité et de l’identité personnelle.

  The Role of Women in Work and Society

  French historians are concerned by women’s history since thirty years, but studies are manly dealing with the Occident. For the ancient Near East, there is now a great deal of limited studies on women and gender history, but few syntheses. Furthermore, economic history is well represented in Assyriology, thanks to the good preservation of dozen of thousands of clay tablets recording administrative operations, contracts and acts dealing with family law. Despite these voluminous sources, the topic of work has not been much addressed. The thirty participants of this conference will examine the various economic occupations involving women, in a gender perspective, over the three millennia of Near Eastern history.

  Women in Hellenophonic societies in the Roman East

  Ce colloque international est organisé dans le cadre du programme GRECS d'ANHIMA, UMR 8210 (« Les Grecs, des Romains dans l'Empire : culture et société »), en collaboration avec le programme « Logiques de genre ». Il poursuit un cycle commencé par deux journées d’études qui se sont tenues en 2012 et 2013. Il rassemble des historiens spécialistes de sources diverses et se donne pour objectif de reconstituer, comme en mosaïque, le portrait d’une figure encore mal connue, à savoir celle des femmes grecques vivant, sous le Haut-Empire, dans les provinces de l'Orient romain.

  Call for papers - History

  Personal Influence on the Rulers of Imperial Rome and the Early Middle Ages

  Since rulers of the Imperial Roman Period and the Early Middle Ages occupied the highest (secular) position, individuals who exerted influence on them enjoyed a great extent of power. As a consequence, there was bitter rivalry between the various agents, which is reflected in discourses on legitimate and illegitimate influence. The goal of the conference is to establish interpersonal influence as a subject of historical research. Furthermore the study of influence on rulers is to make a contribution towards political history as well as the history of mentalities and discourse.
