The British worlds, a community of destinies?
Le Groupe de recherches « mondes britanniques » organise, les 14 et 15 novembre 2014 en Sorbonne, un colloque international sur le thème « Les Mondes britanniques, une communauté de destins ? ». Il s’agira d’étudier sur la longue durée l’histoire de ces espaces et de ces populations très divers dont le trait commun a peut-être été l’appartenance à un « ensemble » britannique régi par des modes de domination, de régulation, de circulation et de contestation spécifiques dont il convient de dresser les contours et les réalités.

Living on the coast: contemporary human and ecological issues
26th study days of the Société d’écologie humaine
Dans le cadre de ses 26e journées scientifiques, la Société d’écologie humaine (SEH), l’observatoire hommes-milieux (OHM) « Littoral méditerranéen » du CNRS et le laboratoire ESPACE (UMR 7300) proposent d’actualiser la question des rapports société-environnement en contexte littoral. Ce colloque international vise plus particulièrement à traiter, par le regard de diverses disciplines scientifiques ainsi que par l’approche de professionnels (de la gestion des territoires, des espaces naturels, de l’urbanisme, du patrimoine, de la santé, etc.) le sujet de l'habitabilité des espaces côtiers et du rapport qui s'instaure entre les populations et le milieu littoral à travers l'acte « d'habiter » envisagé au sens large. Ces journées scientifiques permettront d'aborder, à partir de communications orales et affichées, différentes thématiques liées à l'adaptation de l'Homme avec le milieu littoral et en particulier : vivre avec le risque naturel, le rapport à l'environnement littoral, la patrimonialisation et le développement local, les outils et méthodes d'aide à la gestion, la gouvernance et le jeux d'acteurs. Une sortie de terrain dans le port de Marseille clôturera ces journées de la SEH.

Experts and Expertise in the League of Nations Mandates
Figures, Fields and Tools
Our vantage point is to consider the growing in importance of expertise during the twentieth century within the management of the colonial world and hence to study the emergence of the international sphere as a level of decision making. The purpose of this conference is to investigate the influence of early international agendas, advanced across the colonial world by experts operating in the orbit of international organizations. The investigation should also focus on the procedures and framework of international recognition of expertise at the intersection of the colonial and the international spheres. A first line of enquiry tackles the relations between the epistemologies that underpinned scientific knowledge in the colony and the metropolis. Another one looks into the sites of production of Mandatory expertise. Finally, we want to investigate the explicitly evolutionary conceptual framework for the mandates and its influence on the work of experts. We invite contributions dealing with the figure of the expert, whether official or not, and the various fields and tools of Mandatory expertise. Part and parcel of our reflexion is also a study of the limits and scope of expertise.

Trade and traders throughout history
Linked to human societies through the ages, trade has taken many forms; it was associated with the appearance of man since barter between tribes and groups of people in the primitive era. This has been one of the pillars of political entities (kingdoms, principalities, Nations and Empires) during all historical periods; it was a factor in their appearance and economic dynamism, a source of political and financial resources due to significant revenue provided to the public treasury power. Trade was behind the emergence of several social phenomena and changes that have affected certain groups of society; it was and is a tool for traffic or movement of social actors, values, and ideas between communities. Currently, trade is of great importance for economic development in all countries ; it is a real challenge that has had an impact on the lives of people, their daily lives, and human and economic development.

Dans la perspective des Intelligence studies qui ont ouvert la voie, dans les pays de langue anglaise, à une réflexion sur le politique et l'État dans les pays du Nord – réflexion dans laquelle le renseignement est interprété comme un attribut et une manifestation de l'exercice de l'État – l'ambition de ce deuxième ouvrage du Groupe d'études sur les mondes policiers en Afrique (GEMPA) est d'étendre aux problématiques coloniales et impériales ces questionnements.

Massacres and repression in the colonial world
Archives and fictions in the service of historiography or of official discourse?
À l’approche de la date commémorative du 1er décembre 2014, le « massacre de Thiaroye » servira de point d’appui pour situer les enjeux scientifiques et éthiques qui animeront ces journées d’études transdisciplinaires. Ayant pour objet d’étude le « massacre colonial » – y compris celui de Thiaroye, les interventions retenues auront pour but de poursuivre une réflexion relative à un ou plusieurs des axes suivants : (1) les pratiques des historiens, notamment leur rapport aux sources ; (2) la place des fictions historiques, aux côtés de l’historiographie, dans la connaissance du passé ; et (3) la question de l’« engagement » social de l’historien par rapport à une pratique professionnelle qui se veut « objective ».

The aim of this study day is to offer new directions for research and present new issues in the history of colonial law, as well as in the practices of justice in the colonial areas of the modern period. The field of investigation should not be reduced to the French area –that would be nearly impossible since the old colonial regime contributed to the establishment of globalization. The British, Spanish, Portuguese or Dutch colonies –without any territorial restrictions – are included as potential fields of research, in order to stress the conference’s international dimension.
