  "Reviews and Empire". The COLOREV Project

  Ce projet a pour objectif d’analyser les revues coloniales aux XIX^e et XX^esiècles, c’est-à-dire à partir du moment de leur véritable naissance et déploiement jusqu’à nos jours. L’idée est de s’interroger sur l’importance et la portée véritable des revues relatives aux sciences juridiques, sociales, économiques et politiques, littéraires, historiques et médicales, qui ont pourtant été délaissées dans les recherches historiographiques au profit de l’étude d’œuvres majeures comme les « romans » ou les monographies spécialisées d’auteurs de référence. Nous avons déjà fait plusieurs manifestations sur le sujet et constitué une équipe internationale. Le but de ces journées est à la fois d'échanger et de « monter » un projet européen pour le soumettre à une demande de financement. L'équipe est ouverte et peu donc accueillir au fur et à mesure de l'avancée du projet de nouveaux membres.

  Experts and Expertise in the League of Nations Mandates

  Figures, Fields and Tools

  Our vantage point is to consider the growing in importance of expertise during the twentieth century within the management of the colonial world and hence to study the emergence of the international sphere as a level of decision making. The purpose of this conference is to investigate the influence of early international agendas, advanced across the colonial world by experts operating in the orbit of international organizations. The investigation should also focus on the procedures and framework of international recognition of expertise at the intersection of the colonial and the international spheres. A first line of enquiry tackles the relations between the epistemologies that underpinned scientific knowledge in the colony and the metropolis. Another one looks into the sites of production of Mandatory expertise. Finally, we want to investigate the explicitly evolutionary conceptual framework for the mandates and its influence on the work of experts. We invite contributions dealing with the figure of the expert, whether official or not, and the various fields and tools of Mandatory expertise. Part and parcel of our reflexion is also a study of the limits and scope of expertise.

  The body of emotions

  About the performativity of emotion in history

  En prenant pour point de départ la métaphore du corps, ce colloque veut faire émerger de nouvelles possibilités d’étude de la performativité historique des émotions, comprises comme des agents donnant du sens aux corps, que ceux-ci soient physiques, sociaux, politiques, artistiques ou littéraires. Ainsi, l’expression « corps émotionnel » peut être considérée comme une catégorie analytique permettant de comprendre comment différentes conceptions historiques des émotions, ainsi que les pratiques et les objets qui leur sont associés, ont produit des systèmes de relations physiques et symboliques qui peuvent être compris comme des corps, dans une optique multidisciplinaire.

  Progrès? Progress? Fortschritt?

  20th international philosophy conference in Evian

  Qu'il existe un progrès historique, scientifique, philosophique et moral est une idée déjà présente dans l'Antiquité et qui s'est répandue au plus tard à partir des Lumières. En même temps, la critique de l'idée d'un développement allant du pire vers le meilleur - développement orienté vers un but, linéaire et obéissant à une logique déterminée - s'est toujours faite entendre. Avant même les catastrophes du XX^e siècle, on a été conduit à douter du fait que progrès et régression soient nettement distincts et à faire du progrès une catégorie idéologique à rejeter au nom de l'ouverture et de la pluralité. Mais quel serait alors le prix à payer ?

  Knowledges, Sciences, Techniques and State building in Iberian America, 1790-1870

  Over the last few decades the renewal of the history of the sciences has been marked by an opening towards non-European spaces, especially the Iberian Americas, and by the study of the relations between knowledges and power. We now have at our disposal a growing body of work on the imperial sciences, the contribution of the colonies to the advancement of knowledge, more particularly the natural sciences, and on the Enlightenment and the links between sciences, revolutions and independence in the colonial territories. However it is the opposite hypothesis that we seek to explore, highlighting both the modalities by which the legacy of the imperial, colonial Enlightenment was passed on and transformed, and the processes which meant that late 19th century Ibero-American societies, including Brazil and the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, were ready to take full advantage of the new scientistic paradigm with a rapidity that ought to strike us as surprising.

  La revue d'histoire de l'université de Sherbrooke (RHUS) prépare actuellement son numéro 2013-2014 sur le thème « La force de l'image dans l'histoire ». Les articles que nous publions peuvent être rédigés autant par des étudiants que par des chercheurs confirmés. La RHUS a pour mission de diffuser les travaux des étudiants ainsi que de susciter l’intérêt envers leurs champs de recherche. Nous recevons les propositions de textes jusqu'au 17 janvier 2014.
