    Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

    This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

    Doing Post-Western Sociology

    The social sciences and humanities have developed considerably in the last thirty years in different Asian countries where both theoretical approaches and methodologies have been constantly changing. As a result of the circulation and globalisation of knowledge, new centres and new peripheral areas have been formed and new hierarchies have quietly emerged, giving rise in turn to new competitive environments in which innovative knowledge is being produced. The centres in which knowledge in the social sciences and humanities is produced have moved towards Asia and in particular to China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and India.

    Managing hunger and satiety

    Consumers and producers' perspectives

    The eight edition of the International Research Symposium aims to share up-todate research on managing hunger and satiety both from the consumers and from the producer’s perspectives. This day will be devoted to address appetite and food intake mechanisms in relation to pleasure and health in a product context or a food service context. Normal and healthy eating will be discussed as well as some mentions of overeating and obesity or under eating and denutrition. A range of speakers from both academic and industrial sectors will share their knowledge and understanding of hunger and satiety and their relation to eating behaviors. The issue will thus be addressed on both physiological, psychological and social levels.

    Old Ideals, New Realities

    Le paternalisme a longtemps souffert d'une très mauvaise réputation. Marqueur d'une hiérarchie sociale, morale ou politique devenue insupportable, il semblait avoir définitivement disparu (au moins dans ses formes instutionnelles) de nos sociétés libérales et démocratiques. Depuis une dizaine d'années, cependant, le monde universitaire (mais aussi politique) se passionne à nouveau pour sa dernière réincarnation, le paternalisme libertarian ou le « coup de pouce » (Nudges) défendu par l'économiste Richard Thaler et le jursite Cass Sunstein. L'objet de cette journée d'étude interdisciplinaire est de discuter de cette nouvelle légitimité et de s'interroger sur les évolutions théoriques ou sociétales qui pourraient expliquer cette évolution des modes de pensée.

    Consumers and producers’ perspectives

    The Research Symposium welcomes, once a year, international researchers and professionals to present their work and discuss issues related to food and hospitality. Each year, a specific topic is addressed from the point of view of multiple scientific fields such as health sciences, nutrition, psychology, cognition, sociology, economics, etc., offering an enriching overview on different topics. The eight edition of the International Research Symposium aims to share up-to-date research on managing hunger and satiety both from the consumers and from the producer’s perspectives. More, this day will be devoted to address appetite and food intake mechanisms in relation to pleasure and health in a product context or a food service context.
