Voluntary Associations in the Yugoslav Space
Relations with State and Family from the Late 19th Century to the Present
The workshop focusses on the changing relationship between voluntary associations/NGOs, the state and the family. According to traditional sociological views, civil society – and thus associations, as its most frequently evoked incarnation – are conceived as being opposed to both the state and the family, a sort of free space for collective agency escaping from the strictures of both kinship structures and of the state. More recently, scholars of civil society have convincingly shown the problems with drawing a clear-cut border between the state and VAs/NGOs, and tend to see this border as porous, shifting, and subject to negotiation.

Religious diversity: comparative views East (Asia) and West (Europe)
Issues in diversity have become crucial all around the planet for political and social reasons. In a world whose cultural and religious plurality is expanding it nevertheless expands in a variety of forms and for somewhat different reasons: diversity in the West assumes somewhat different logics and shapes than in the East. The comparison between different forms of religious diversities therefore supposes to take into account the role of religious systems themselves and the political context in which they are embedded. It otherwise requires a parallel comparison of the logics of diversity (opposition, coexistence, hybridity, syncretism …) and the social acceptation of religions and religious relationships in their specific cultural backgrounds.

History of Science, History of Text (2011-2016)
In 2015-2016, the seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will keep exploring textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW (“Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World”) As in previous years, the seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; how textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations; how actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced In line with the beginning of phase 3 of the project SAW, devoted to facets of the history of the historiography of ancient mathematics, the seminar will pay special attention to the sources attesting to work in the history of mathematics.

Science, Nature and Art in the Time of the Baroque
Baroque School Focus – Abengoa Foundation
With the birth of the “new science” in the wake of Bacon, the theories on the world and nature ceased being essentially poetic –as they were considered in the long inherited mediaeval tradition– and began to be felt as essentially scientific. Modern science and the development of the artistic culture of the Baroque came hand in hand and became the cornerstones of the history of European culture. In this modern science, the discovery of the foundations of nature led to questions on the relationship between people and the natural environment, which went beyond living nature to open up new avenues to the theories of light and colour, space and time, as expressed in the creative brilliance of Velázquez in the gardens of Villa Medicis.

Assessing social transformations in qualitative research
The study of “change” is a central research topic in social science. However, how can we concretely assess social change when we conduct qualitative research which is based on case studies, and has a limited scope of inquiry both in terms of time and space? The complexity of human societies makes it difficult to know which elements to consider as relevant. Very often the multiple dynamics that are observable at any one time give an incoherent picture, where no clear direction is discernible. The presentations will be supported by concrete examples showing the method employed, the scope of relevance of the assessed change, as well as the lines of causality which are drawn consequently.

The first part of the conference will discuss the global jihad and strategies of territoiralization. The jihad narrative, rooted in the colonial period in its current interpretation refers to belonging to the umma, a global nation imagined as the basis for a new identity which, instead of relating to a territory, follows the thread of networks beyond borders. Youths who have chosen the path of jihad thus turn state territories into a cross-border space that is deterritorialized and denationalized.

University meets industry at Denim City in Amsterdam
The aim of this one-day conference is to explore the evolution of denim from its origins in the French town of Nîmes, through the American invention of the modern blue jeans, to the contemporary global manufacturing and marketing of denim and jeans. Blue denim jeans are the most worn garments in the world. Even though denim is often perceived as a symbol of American culture, the denim fabric originated in Europe and has a long history. Yet it was only when denim trousers were riveted that the first modern pair of jeans were created in the late XIXth century. Since this invention, jeans have made grand transformations from a worker’s garment, through a uniform of non-conformity and youth protest, to an item of fashion design. Recently, the Netherlands has become an international marketing cluster for the global denim industry.

Digital Humanities Experiments
#DHIHA6
This conference addresses the gap between the research culture with which Digital Humanists are equipped via their disciplinary backgrounds and the research culture they foster in this field. Why does experimentation play a crucial role in Digital Humanities? How does it contribute to define the relationship between method and research questions? Can we identify barriers which currently prevent Digital Humanities from developing their full potential, leaving little room for iteration, comparison or failure? The conference itself is conceived as an experimental set-up with labs, data experiments and round tables.

Travailler sur / avec les archives et l'écrit en anthropologie et en études littéraires
Perspectives sur le monde swahili
This theme is intended to reflect the rapprochement of the research objects and theoretical perspectives of anthropology and literary studies. This rapprochement offers opportunities to discuss commonalities and differences in how archives and texts are explored and analysed. It also intends to interrogate the relations between the written word and orality and performance. As historians and philologists working on Arabic and Swahili manuscripts have demonstrated, due to early Islamization and the preservation of documents, the Swahili world is characterized by the pervasiveness of the written word. As a result it is a particularly relevant site in which to engage in such theoretical and epistemological reflections.

Old Ideals, New Realities

Tense, Aspect, Modality and Evidentiality
Construction and deconstruction
The verb phrase is a central locus of grammaticalisation in the world’s languages where information, crucial to the interpretation of the utterance, is encoded. Many scholars (Givón, 1982 inter alia) use the acronym TAM to refer to the semantic domains typically grammaticalised in the verb phrase (Tense, Aspect and Modality), but the discovery of evidentiality as a fourth notion questions the universality of this taxonomy. A close observation of the cross-linguistic data can lead to another deconstruction of TAM(E), as it is often difficult to propose a consistent description of each category of this acronym, as well as clear criteria for their borders. The fusional encoding of semantic features belonging in tense, aspect, modality and evidentiality, and the evolution of verb affixes or constructions from one semantic domain to another illustrates further the porosity of these categories. (Nuyts 2014 inter alia)

Literature and Society in Central Asia

Scholarship in Software, Software as Scholarship
From Genesis to Peer Review
Computation and software analysis have entered nearly every imaginable field of scholarship in the last decades, in a variety of forms from digital publication of results to computational modelling embedded in experimental work. In each of these digital outputs - be it an interactive publication with mapping of relevant geo-referenced data, or perhaps a statistical program for the categorization of millions of books according to their literary genre - there is some manifestation directly in the computer code of the scholarly thought that underlies the project, of the intellectual argument around which the outcome is based.

Foreign Rule in Western Europe
Towards a Comparative History of Military Occupations, 1940-1949
Military occupations were a crucial part of the collective experience of Western European societies during the mid-20th century. Occupations conducted by Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Western Allies varied in terms of their goals, methods, and most significantly in their use of violence. In many respects, however, these ideologically different regimes of occupation also shared a range of common features. In contrast to the ruthless occupation policies in the East, these regimes sought to find a viable mode of interaction with both local social intermediaries and the broader population, and thus generally attempted to stabilize their rule by pacifying occupied societies. Many of the quotidian ruling techniques and practices deployed for this purpose produced a set of related socio-political legacies across Western European societies which found their distinctive expression during the subsequent decades.
