This seminar, which is scheduled to extend over several years, is devoted to Mathematics in Renaissance Europe and consists of three main topics, which are Humanism and Mathematics, Algebra related to Arithmetic and Geometry, Mathematics and their area of efficiency: Humanism and Mathematics; Algebra between arithmetics and geometry; Mathematics and and its fields of application.

Exploring 19th and 20th centuries historiographies of mathematics in the ancient world (2015-2016)
Seminar of the European Research Council Project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world"
The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

Ce séminaire entend développer l’investigation des formes savantes de l’écriture géographique en les mettant en contact et en tension avec d’autres formes de textes qui portent également des modalités de connaissance ou de questionnement géographiques (le sentiment paysager, le rapport aux lieux ou à l’espace, le devisement régional, etc.) : l’écriture de fiction sous tous ses registres, mais aussi le texte descriptif, le récit de voyage, l’essai, ou encore les écrits intimes.

Thinking / classifying technical collections and technics of collections
Ce séminaire se propose de réfléchir à la manière dont ont été ou sont aujourd’hui « pensées » les collections techniques – objets, vestiges archéologiques, textes, ouvrages, etc. L’administration de ces collections met en jeu de nombreux acteurs – collecteurs, conservateurs, chercheurs, médiateurs vers le grand public, etc. – dont les réflexions et les actions interagissent. Une collection est en effet tributaire des conditions matérielles et intellectuelles dans lesquelles s’est faite sa réunion, des procédures d’inventaire et de catalogage qui lui sont appliquées, des modes d’identification et de désignation des articles.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the "Arab mathematics", understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science "mathematized" of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi. The texts studied will be discussed at sessions of three hours. Emphasis on reading and commenting on sources.

This seminar is designed as a place of exchange between historians of physics, philosophers of physics, physicists and students in relevant disciplines . Although the program this year has no specific theme , it reflects the interest of the organizers for the questions that lead us to cross interdisciplinary boundaries : between physics and philosophy between history and philosophy, between theoretical construction and experience , between physics and other sciences.

Seminar History of light (2015-2016)
The purpose of this seminar is to study questions raised by theoretical and instrumental optics, to review their modes of interaction and to highlight their connections with other fields of study, such as astronomy. The subjects to be treated will include instruments, theoretical interpretations, links between experiment and theory, as well as ways in which the conclusions might be integrated in teaching programs.

Dans un monde en pleine mutation, la médecine, outre son rôle traditionnel de soin, multiplie ses offres et ses innovations pour une société avide du meilleur, qui incite l’Homme à traiter son corps comme un objet toujours perfectible. Ces expériences nouvelles inscrites dans un nouvel idéal prométhéen, soulèvent des questions inédites : comment conjuguer la technique dans une interaction qui ne laisserait pas de côté ce que l’on pourrait considérer comme des aspects fondateurs de l’humain ? Dans cette offre actuelle de la médecine, en complaisance avec la techno-science, qu’en est-il des destins pulsionnels du sujet ? Serions-nous en train d’assister à la création de nouvelles formes d’habiter son corps ? Quels sont les configurations et enjeux psychiques du « faire corps » avec la prothèse ?

History of Science, History of Text (2011-2016)
In 2015-2016, the seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will keep exploring textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW (“Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World”) As in previous years, the seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; how textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations; how actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced In line with the beginning of phase 3 of the project SAW, devoted to facets of the history of the historiography of ancient mathematics, the seminar will pay special attention to the sources attesting to work in the history of mathematics.

The anthropology of life and representations of the living
Depuis ses origines, l’anthropologie n’a cessé d’aborder la question de la vie à partir de diverses perspectives, en étudiant la vie sociale des groupes humains, les ethnoclassifications ou encore les rites qu’Hocart proposait d’envisager comme les applications d’une « science de la vie ». Plus récemment, se sont développées des approches relevant de l’anthropologie cognitive, de la phénoménologie, de la sémiologie ou de l’anthropologie des techniques tandis que les travaux consacrés à la biopolitique ou aux biotechnologies se sont multipliés. L’objectif du séminaire est d’articuler les résultats obtenus dans ces différentes traditions méthodologiques afin de réfléchir à la manière dont la vie pourrait devenir un véritable objet d’investigation pour l’anthropologie.

Sociology and anthropology of bodies in a process of transformation
Cet atelier portera sur la présentation et la discussion d’enquêtes en cours en sociologie et en anthropologie qui thématisent le corps comme objet d’intervention, de transformations ou de catégorisation. Nous chercherons à aborder la façon dont ces recherches interrogent le travail politique mené par des acteurs à l’égard de leur propre corps ou de celui d'autrui. D’un point de vue pratique, nous poserons la question de ce qui est maintenu ou transformé à travers ces interventions : quelles formes et identités (sexuelles, professionnelles, raciales ou politiques) et quelles catégories (sociales, juridiques, médicales) peuvent être supportées par ces corps ? En quoi, ces corps, peuvent-ils par leurs manifestations résister ou mettre en péril ces transformations ou ces catégorisations ?

Private crusades and public problems
The sociological heritage of Joseph Gusfield
Joseph Gusfield développe une lecture originale des problèmes publics, attentive à la production de sens autant qu’aux rapports de force qui l’accompagnent. Ce colloque, initié peu après la nouvelle de son décès, vise à en débattre de manière collective. Il doit amener à expliciter des usages contrastés de ses écrits, en sociologie de l’action publique, comme en anthropologie des sciences ou en sociologie de l’État. Il doit aussi permettre de revenir sur des pistes de recherche encore méconnues en France, en lien avec des écrits encore non traduits de Gusfield.

Contexts, producers and products of military sociology
Les armées sont réputées être difficiles d’accès aux observateurs extérieurs, institutions closes qui cultivent le secret et contrôlent la parole de leurs membres. Les sociologues ont pourtant su y prendre pied et y expérimenter différentes postures d’observation, que ce soit par la participation aux conflits mondiaux comme soldats, par l’expérience de la conscription comme appelés, par le recrutement dans les services de recherche et de gestion des armées ou par la réponse à la demande militaire de sociologie (soit les quatre principales modalités historiques d’accès à ce terrain) Ce séminaire exploratoire vise la présentation d’expériences d’enquêtes, passées ou actuelles, dans l’institution militaire. Il s’agira d’y articuler les contextes politiques, historiques et institutionnels de production de cette sociologie avec les trajectoires et les ressources de ses producteurs, ainsi qu’avec la forme de ce qu’ils produisent et les usages qui en sont faits.

Why living matter is worth its conceptual and synthetic challenge?
The emergence of life on Earth has long been a major field of questioning for humans. Indeed living matter has always appeared highly singular against the background of “inert” matter so as (i) to interrogate its emergence and (ii) to attempt to convey its original features to inanimate objects. In the course of the XXth century, both latter perspectives have started to be interrogated at the cellular level with a continuously increasing content of information about the molecular components of living cells as well as about their interactions and reactivity. Two different perspectives have been adopted, focusing either on the formation of cell components, or on the onset of cell dynamic organization.

L’Europe et l’économie : si la connexion entre les deux termes appartient désormais au lexique de l’évidence, ce rapprochement ne saurait faire oublier la nouveauté historique qu’il sous-tend. Fait inédit dans l’histoire, la construction d’un ensemble européen supranational repose, dès ses commencements à la fin des années cinquante, sur des dynamiques centripètres qui sont en large partie fondées sur des structures et des processus économiques. Ce constat s’impose à la réflexion des historiens de l’économie de toute époque, afin de saisir les écarts et les convergences entre le présent et les configurations antérieures et pour replacer les dynamiques actuelles dans l’évolution globale du monde contemporain.

The (Re)appropriation of Knowledge and Know-How
Actors, Territories, Processes and Issues
Current research on the elaboration, circulation and usages of knowledge forms has focused on the hybrid nature of these constructions and the various ways of borrowing and re-composition used by them. It has tended to oppose, at times in a rather simplistic manner, supposedly scientific forms of knowledge and those that are seen as being traditional or indigenous ones. The notion of knowledge transfer, extending beyond that of acculturation or borrowing (M. Espagne, Werner, L. Turgeon et D. Delage), has often been employed to explain this process. Although this does in effect enable us to question the circulation of all types of knowledge by different actors and their transposition in varied contexts, it may tend to assume some sort of permanence or autonomy of these knowledge forms.

Surveiller, protéger, informer
Du chevalier d’Éon aux agents secrets des présidents de la Ve République, l’exposition « Le secret de l’État. Surveiller, protéger, informer » bouscule les lieux communs en explorant l’histoire des différentes organisations, des lieux du pouvoir et des techniques singulières du renseignement, de la fin de l’Ancien Régime au XXIe siècle. La construction d’une véritable politique du renseignement intérieur et extérieur depuis la fin de l’Ancien Régime marque la volonté de l’État en France de s’affirmer sur la scène internationale et de protéger l’information. Pour ce faire, un ensemble de documents secrets, de témoignages sonores et audiovisuels inédits et une galerie de machines mystérieuses donnent la parole aux acteurs du secret.
