  Modernisation and the challenge of practice: alternative political spaces (Europe, Americas, 18th-19th centuries)

  En partant d’études de cas empruntées aux espaces européen et américain, ces journées se proposent d’étudier les interactions conflictuelles entre des acteurs ou des groupes d’acteurs et les autorités ou l’État, afin de réexaminer le paradigme de la modernisation des sociétés européenne et américaine aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècle. De ce fait, le choix d’une périodisation par-delà la charnière de la décennie révolutionnaire ne vise pas à reprendre le discours d’une politisation qui commencerait avec la Révolution française avant de se diffuser tout au long du XIX^e siècle, mais bien plutôt à s’intéresser aux permanences d’une appropriation du politique par les acteurs dès l’époque moderne, et la possibilité de la construction d’espaces politiques qui ne sont pas ceux qui sont privilégiés dans les analyses classiques de la politisation.

  Science, Nature and Art in the Time of the Baroque

  With the birth of the “new science” in the wake of Bacon, the theories on the world and nature ceased being essentially poetic –as they were considered in the long inherited mediaeval tradition– and began to be felt as essentially scientific. Modern science and the development of the artistic culture of the Baroque came hand in hand and became the cornerstones of the history of European culture. In this modern science, the discovery of the foundations of nature led to questions on the relationship between people and the natural environment, which went beyond living nature to open up new avenues to the theories of light and colour, space and time, as expressed in the creative brilliance of Velázquez in the gardens of Villa Medicis.
