Justice and Climate Transitions

In the lead up to the 2015 UN Paris Climate Conference the Paris Institute for Advanced Studies will hold an interdisciplinary conference on “Justice and Climate Transitions” organised with the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The Conference will bring together leading thinkers from philosophy, policy and the social sciences to examine the moral, social and political issues at stake in transition to a low carbon society. Panellists are invited to discuss how might we interpret and evaluate different transition pathways and low-carbon futures in terms of social justice. The aim is to present both philosophical and critical social scientific perspectives on these questions before bringing these into dialogue with each other.

L’histoire de la Caraïbe a besoin de s’écrire au-delà de la réalité des petites parcelles, tant de fois séparées par un bras de mer. Comment inventorier les expressions du morcellement pour écrire notre histoire commune ? D’Haïti à Trinidad et Tobago en passant par Saint Kitts et Navis, la Dominique ou la Martinique, quelles sont les ressemblances ? La langue du grand compromis sera-t-elle l’anglais ou le créole ? CARIFESTA est l’occasion d’en discuter, pour commencer à créer des contenus, à donner des contours.

Europe and the Arabian Peninsula (19th-21th centuries)

This international workshop will deal with the relations between Europe and the Arabian Peninsula in the Modern Era, from the beginnings of globalization until the most recent economic and strategic developments. In order to study both the evolution and the contents of such relations, two main topics will be given a more particular interest: Cultural and Scientific Relations in connection with the change of mutual understanding from the 19^th to the 21^th century; Evolution of Economic relations from the 19^th to the 21^th century.

À l’heure, notamment, de l’émergence de pratiques de « consommation collaborative » ou à celle de la réinvention d’une « économie circulaire », le fait même de jeter, de se séparer d’un bien, se laisse parfois assimiler à une faute, là où à l’inverse, certaines pratiques de conservation et de réparation des objets déchus ou abimés, parce qu’elles emblématisent un futur « soutenable » et souhaitable, sont encouragées, applaudies et considérées comme vertueuses. Les relations que nous entretenons avec nos restes constituent-elles désormais des vecteurs de distinctions culturelles et sociales ?
