This seminar, which is scheduled to extend over several years, is devoted to Mathematics in Renaissance Europe and consists of three main topics, which are Humanism and Mathematics, Algebra related to Arithmetic and Geometry, Mathematics and their area of efficiency: Humanism and Mathematics; Algebra between arithmetics and geometry; Mathematics and and its fields of application.

Exploring 19th and 20th centuries historiographies of mathematics in the ancient world (2015-2016)
Seminar of the European Research Council Project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world"
The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the "Arab mathematics", understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science "mathematized" of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi. The texts studied will be discussed at sessions of three hours. Emphasis on reading and commenting on sources.

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE teams that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

M2 research course offer
Le stage proposé s’insère dans le cadre du projet Socioagripest Pesticides et santé des travailleurs agricoles : entre mise en visibilité et invisibilisation (2013-2016), financé par l’ONEMA dans le cadre de l’APR ANSES 2012 et du programme ECOPHYTO. Ce projet vise à étudier les effets politiques et sociaux de cette mise en visibilité des liens entre pesticides et santé au travail en milieu professionnel agricole. Dans le cadre de ce projet, l’objectif du stage sera de réfléchir spécifiquement au rôle des médecins dans cette mise en visibilité et, inversement, aux effets de cette dynamique sur leur monde professionnel.

History of Science, History of Text (2011-2016)
In 2015-2016, the seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will keep exploring textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW (“Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World”) As in previous years, the seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; how textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations; how actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced In line with the beginning of phase 3 of the project SAW, devoted to facets of the history of the historiography of ancient mathematics, the seminar will pay special attention to the sources attesting to work in the history of mathematics.

L’Europe et l’économie : si la connexion entre les deux termes appartient désormais au lexique de l’évidence, ce rapprochement ne saurait faire oublier la nouveauté historique qu’il sous-tend. Fait inédit dans l’histoire, la construction d’un ensemble européen supranational repose, dès ses commencements à la fin des années cinquante, sur des dynamiques centripètres qui sont en large partie fondées sur des structures et des processus économiques. Ce constat s’impose à la réflexion des historiens de l’économie de toute époque, afin de saisir les écarts et les convergences entre le présent et les configurations antérieures et pour replacer les dynamiques actuelles dans l’évolution globale du monde contemporain.

O nome Humboldt evoca aqui tanto o objeto partilhado entre diversos trabalhos no âmbito das ciências da cultura, quanto o modelo de uma ciência transdisciplinar e transareal. Grupos de pesquisa que assumem para si o desafio transareal precisam contar não apenas com a competência intercultural dos pesquisadores e pesquisadoras em particular, mas também com a efetiva colaboração entre instituições, para além do intercâmbio bilateral.

The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance
Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale
Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

From folklore to ethnology, a women's thing?
Si interroger l’histoire de l’anthropologie sous l’angle du genre n’est pas faire œuvre de pionnier, poser la question en resserrant la focale sur le folklore et l’ethnologie du proche constitue une démarche plus inédite. Il s’agira en premier lieu de prendre acte du contraste que forme, des balbutiements de la discipline à nos jours, la place prise par les femmes. De l’invisibilité d’hier à la surreprésentation actuelle, l’on tentera de comprendre, en se fondant sur des portraits, individuels ou collectifs, l’incidence du genre dans les carrières de femmes ethnographes. Inversant la perspective, l’on envisagera également la manière dont une œuvre de folkloriste ou d’ethnologue peut participer d’une vie de femme.

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Portée par une civilisation technique, la conquête européenne a façonné la compréhension des sociétés africaines grâce à ses instruments de collecte et d’analyse de l’information, même sur les territoires qui ont échappé à la domination. De quels outils – manuscrits, appareils d’enregistrement, vêtements, véhicules, stations expérimentales – les chercheurs et les auteurs de recherches en sciences sociales sur l’Afrique ont-ils disposé ? Présentaient-ils une spécificité « africaniste », et, dans ce cas, comment peut-on la caractériser ou l’expliquer ? Comment ces appareils et leurs fonctionnalités ont-ils voyagé et participé à la création de savoirs nouveaux ? Comment ces outils ont-ils participé à la reconfiguration des sciences sociales et de leurs savoirs en dehors du continent africain ? En s’intéressant à ces instruments de la connaissance, le colloque entend dévoiler quelques-uns des rouages épistémologiques des savoirs sur l’Afrique.

Progrès de la science expérimentale, diffusion générale d’un esprit « positif » sur le plan de la connaissance comme de la société, rendent progressivement inévitable un nouveau type d’échanges entre philosophie et sciences de la nature.

Opening science for sharing, from north to south in the French-speaking world
La science contemporaine aspire à l'universalité, mais, d'une part, les données scientométriques montrent plutôt une science concentrée dans les universités des pays anglo-saxons et, d'autre part, de nombreuses publications scientifiques restent inaccessibles aux chercheurs des pays du Sud et aux citoyens non chercheurs du monde entier. Peut-on ouvrir la science pour mieux la partager et la rendre véritablement universelle ? Ce questionnement est au cœur de ce qu'on appelle le mouvement de la science ouverte, qui se propose comme cadre normatif alternatif à celui de la science conventionnelle. Ce colloque réunit des chercheurs du Nord et du Sud de la francophonie qui partageront leurs réflexions sur ce que pourrait être cette science ouverte, inclusive, aspirant à un véritable universalisme.
