This seminar, which is scheduled to extend over several years, is devoted to Mathematics in Renaissance Europe and consists of three main topics, which are Humanism and Mathematics, Algebra related to Arithmetic and Geometry, Mathematics and their area of efficiency: Humanism and Mathematics; Algebra between arithmetics and geometry; Mathematics and and its fields of application.

Exploring 19th and 20th centuries historiographies of mathematics in the ancient world (2015-2016)
Seminar of the European Research Council Project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world"
The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the "Arab mathematics", understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science "mathematized" of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi. The texts studied will be discussed at sessions of three hours. Emphasis on reading and commenting on sources.

History and Philosophy of Mathematics
The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE teams that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

History of Science, History of Text (2011-2016)
In 2015-2016, the seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will keep exploring textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW (“Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World”) As in previous years, the seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; how textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations; how actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced In line with the beginning of phase 3 of the project SAW, devoted to facets of the history of the historiography of ancient mathematics, the seminar will pay special attention to the sources attesting to work in the history of mathematics.

L’Europe et l’économie : si la connexion entre les deux termes appartient désormais au lexique de l’évidence, ce rapprochement ne saurait faire oublier la nouveauté historique qu’il sous-tend. Fait inédit dans l’histoire, la construction d’un ensemble européen supranational repose, dès ses commencements à la fin des années cinquante, sur des dynamiques centripètres qui sont en large partie fondées sur des structures et des processus économiques. Ce constat s’impose à la réflexion des historiens de l’économie de toute époque, afin de saisir les écarts et les convergences entre le présent et les configurations antérieures et pour replacer les dynamiques actuelles dans l’évolution globale du monde contemporain.

O nome Humboldt evoca aqui tanto o objeto partilhado entre diversos trabalhos no âmbito das ciências da cultura, quanto o modelo de uma ciência transdisciplinar e transareal. Grupos de pesquisa que assumem para si o desafio transareal precisam contar não apenas com a competência intercultural dos pesquisadores e pesquisadoras em particular, mas também com a efetiva colaboração entre instituições, para além do intercâmbio bilateral.

The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance
Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale
Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

From folklore to ethnology, a women's thing?
Si interroger l’histoire de l’anthropologie sous l’angle du genre n’est pas faire œuvre de pionnier, poser la question en resserrant la focale sur le folklore et l’ethnologie du proche constitue une démarche plus inédite. Il s’agira en premier lieu de prendre acte du contraste que forme, des balbutiements de la discipline à nos jours, la place prise par les femmes. De l’invisibilité d’hier à la surreprésentation actuelle, l’on tentera de comprendre, en se fondant sur des portraits, individuels ou collectifs, l’incidence du genre dans les carrières de femmes ethnographes. Inversant la perspective, l’on envisagera également la manière dont une œuvre de folkloriste ou d’ethnologue peut participer d’une vie de femme.

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Πολυμαθία et πολυτροπία in the Antonine period
Apulée de Madaure, « beau philosophe, très éloquent tant dans la langue grecque que la latine » (Apol. 4, 1) a vécu, selon une approximation vraisemblable, entre 125 et 180. Par là, il apparaît comme un acteur éminent de la culture impériale de l’époque antonine. La recherche récente a posé des jalons importants en replaçant l’auteur dans le contexte de la « seconde sophistique », un courant culturel qui s’est surtout exprimé en grec, aux II° et III° siècles. Mais des nuances, des précisions et des compléments restent à apporter : d’autres pistes fécondes sont apparues ou ont été renouvelées très récemment, comme sa proximité intellectuelle et biographique avec Aulu-Gelle, son identité provinciale , son rapport au langage et aux langues , son rapport au platonisme, et son attrait pour la chose religieuse.

Modernizers: Changing science and society in the Middle East and North Africa (1870s-1930s)
Re-constructing a local genealogy of the scientific modernization in North Africa and the Middle East is still a pending task. Research on modern Arab-Islamic scientists, physicians and engineers will help expand the collective memory of modernization in those countries by adding new, often badly-known or forgotten actors to its ranks. Biographies will also help illuminate the intrinsic connection existing between science and society, showing how science has always been a necessary element in plans for national independence, social change and democratic rule. This conference will focus on the biographies of some late 19th-early 20th century scientists from Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria

The uses of money and resources in popular environments (19th-20th centuries)
La conception du rapport à l’argent et aux ressources des pauvres et des nécessiteux s’est modifiée au XIXe siècle. La revue Les études sociales se propose de revenir sur quelques-uns des aspects de cette « intelligence de la pauvreté » et du rôle qu’ont tenu (et tiennent encore) les sciences humaines et sociales dans cette ingénierie à visée réformatrice et populaire, à travers un numéro spécial à paraître fin 2016.

Les utopies scientifiques en Union soviétique
Fiction, science et pouvoir (1917-1991)
L’objectif de ce colloque est de comprendre comment les utopies scientifiques, en Union soviétique, ont pu avoir une fonction heuristique, participer de la transformation de l’activité scientifique et reconfigurer les rapports entre science et pouvoir. Le questionnement portera d’abord sur les relations entre fiction et sciences, afin d’explorer comment littérature et cinéma se sont appropriés certains des concepts basés sur les découvertes scientifiques et, inversement, comment les sciences se sont servies des imaginaires proposés par les fictions pour étoffer leurs discours, contester les découvertes ou se lancer dans des expérimentations inédites. Ce double mouvement est médiatisé par le pouvoir. Aussi, on sera attentif à la commande sociale et aux mécanismes de censure à l’œuvre.

Un “Monuments Man” belge et son impact sur la protection du patrimoine culturel mondial
L’Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (IRPA) organise un symposium international en l’honneur de son fondateur et premier directeur, Paul Coremans (1908-1965). Le cinquantième anniversaire de son décès est l’occasion unique de jeter un regard rétrospectif sur son étonnante carrière. L’impact de sa vision novatrice et de ses idées en matière de conservation et de restauration des œuvres d’art a eu une importance fondamentale, tant en Belgique qu’à l’étranger. Ses prises de position, sa pensée et son action sur le terrain seront au cœur de cette rencontre internationale.
