Gender, justice and imprisonment

La justice et l'enfermement ne sont pas neutres. La criminalité, les stratégies de défense, les sentences, les formes d'enfermement méritent d'être intérrogées sous le prisme du genre. Les interventions centrées sur les époques moderne et contemporaine s'ouvrent sur trois pays d'Europe de l'ouest : Angleterre, Belgique, France. Cette journée vise à mettre en évidence, à discuter, à comparer les évolutions dans le temps et l'espace des « machines » judiciaire et pénitenciaire à travers des études de cas précises.

Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19^th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

« L’insociable sociabilité » au cœur des tensions sociales et culturelles en Grande-Bretagne

"Unsocial sociability" and socio-cultural tensions in Enlightenment Britain

Dans le cadre du projet international HIDISOC (History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832)), ce colloque interdisciplinaire a pour objectif de comprendre les mécanismes qui mettent à l’épreuve la sociabilité et de chercher les manifestations de « l’insociable sociabilité » des hommes (Kant). Il s’agira d’identifier les tensions culturelles et sociales et les formes de résistance qui définissent la sociabilité britannique au cours du long XVIII^e siècle.

Towards a British model of sociability: adaptation and opposition

Dans le cadre du projet interdisciplinaire HIDISOC « History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832) », la journée d’étude du 13 mars 2015, organisée par PLEIADE (université Paris 13) et HCTI (UBO Brest) vise à appréhender, dans une perspective comparatiste, l'évolution de la sociabilité britannique au cours du long dix-huitième siècle, sous l'angle des dynamiques et conflits entre pratiques et modèles nationaux de sociabilité.
