  Monograms, emblematic letters and enigmatic figures in emblems (late Middle Ages-early Renaissance)

  Aux côtés des armoiries, des devises et des mots, l’emblématique de la fin du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance donne une place essentielle aux lettres de l’alphabet. Si quelques-unes de mentions ou associations de lettres se comprennent aisément, dans la mesure où elles correspondent aux initiales de leur utilisateur, à celles du couple qu’il forme avec son épouse, à la terre qu’il gouverne ou même au mot qu’il emploie, beaucoup de ces « monogrammes » restent totalement hermétiques et résistent à toute interprétation. Y compris parmi les plus connus tel que le EV de Jean de Berry, le EE de Philippe le Bon, la croix triple dans le 8 de François I^er.

  From Hageveld to Liege, Corneille Richard Antoine Van Bommel: the career of a militant teacher priest (1790-1852)

  Corneille Van Bommel (1790-1852) a profondément marqué son temps comme pédagogue d’avant-garde et comme militant pour la liberté de l’enseignement ecclésiastique avant d’occuper pendant vingt-deux ans le siège épiscopal de Liège. À l’occasion du 225^e anniversaire de sa naissance, il a semblé opportun  de réunir, dans les lieux mêmes où le grand évêque a vécu, un colloque où seront examinés plusieurs aspects de son activité ainsi que l’environnement religieux, politique, économique, social et culturel où elle s’est déployée.

  Francis I and the Artists of the North (1515-1547)

  As an extention of the events of 2015 celebrating the 500th anniversary of the accession of Francis I (1 January 1515) and the victory at Marignan (13-14 September 1515), the symposium will focus on the ties between the "grand roy Françoys" and the North. Whereas the exchanges between Francis I and Italy have attracted much attention, the King’s relations with the old Southern Netherlands, as rich and complex, have not been carefully studied. The symposium "Francis I and Artists of the North (1515-1547)" aims to fill this gap by considering the interest of the King of France in artists and musicians from the old Southern Netherlands and their works.

  Building techniques in writings on architecture between Italy, France and the Low Countries

  Les techniques constructives dans les écrits d’architecture entre Italie, France et anciens Pays-Bas

  This conference focuses on the connection between architectural theory and construction techniques. The first part deals with the analysis of technical descriptions, their relationship with building practice, their rhetorical value, and their international circulation and adaptation. It comprises case studies from Italy, France, and the Low Countries. The second part approaches the same problem in a comparative perspective and takes the form of round-table discussions structured around three themes: the relationship between technical writings and construction practices, the literary aspects of technical digressions, and the translation and adaptation of Italian treatises.
