  Floods as heritage: the heritage value of floods?

  This workshop will explore the possibilities of considering floods as heritage. Floods are usually considered as destructive forces, but here we wish to focus on their creative aspect. There has been considerable work on the heritage value of rivers, but we want to explore the potential of considering floods themselves as heritage. What is the intellectual and practical potential of making this connection? What are the possible dangers involved? How and why does the process of remembering floods differ in different places and among different people? How can the memory of floods be considered a creative process?

  Revisit Patrick Geddes

  In the interdisciplinarity of his thought, its international dimensions and the timeliness of his ideas, but also given the misunderstanding of his work in France, Espaces et Sociétés devotes its next folder issue to Patrick Geddes, pioneer of modern urbanism and interdisciplinary methods, precursor of environmentalism.  In effect, the environmental question has not emerged suddenly in urbanism, it goes back to the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th century with authors such as Geddes.   The choice of Geddes reflects the interdisciplinarity of his thought, its international reach and the novelty of his ideas, but also by the lack of his work in France; it was necessary, in fact, to wait until 1994 for the first translation of his work Cities in Evolution (1915).  Equally this number wishes to address this oversight by understanding and by calling for a critical rereading of his work.

  The vertical city

  Exploring and thinking the vertical dimension of urbanisation in the context of globalisation and climate change

  Ce colloque entend se saisir de la verticalisation accélérée de l’urbanisation, alors que se multiplient les tours dans les villes à travers le monde, que de nouveaux espaces utiles émergent en hauteur et que les réseaux de transport articulent la ville stratifiée. L’intensification de l’urbanisation accroît localement la pression sur les ressources de l’espace souterrain, contribue à modifier les circulations et les flux, et réinterroge plus largement la production et la fabrication des environnements urbains dans le contexte de changement climatique et de métropolisation. Le renouvellement des réflexions et actions sur la ville passe par le croisement des regards disciplinaires sur le couple horizontalité / verticalité, au présent et au passé, et par la capitalisation croisée des expériences des praticiens et des chercheurs.

  À travers la problématique de l’arrivée en ville, de ses modalités, des impressions et des représentations qui en découlent, le colloque questionnera les rapports entre mobilité, culture et identité métropolitaine qui sont au cœur de ce projet de recherche. Nous chercherons à interroger les modalités d’entrée en ville, en fonction de l’évolution des limites urbaines et des moyens de transport, tant sur le plan de l’aménagement des espaces traversés qu’au prisme du regard de celui / celle qui se déplace.

  Infrastructures and societies in the Alpes, from Antiquity to the present day

  Loin d’être des espaces fermés et repliés sur elles-mêmes, les Alpes ont toujours été en contact avec le monde extérieur par le biais des hommes et des marchandises qui les ont traversées. La thématique centrale du colloque sera l’étude du rapport entre les infrastructures et les phénomènes sociaux dans l’espace alpin de l’Antiquité à l’époque actuelle, puisque la présence d’importantes voies de trafic et de flux d’échange a été un élément qui a fortement affecté la réalité historique des territoires. De plus, la construction de nouvelles infrastructures et le déplacement des axes du trafic a produit des gagnants mais aussi des perdants parmi les groupes sociaux et les communautés alpines.
