Student movements and (post-)colonial emancipations
Transnational itineraries, dialogues and programmes
This one-day conference investigates the role of student movements in individual and collective emancipations, from the struggle for colonial liberation to the challenges posed by contemporary globalisation. This conference seeks to bring these various approaches together, in order to discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making.

Women, Religions and Gender Relations

The call is designed to offer a platform to scholars to present their research on the topic and exchange their ideas on research findings at an international level.

The Left and nationalism in Europe
The tragic attacks in Paris on 7 January and 13 November 2015 have engendered vivid debates about national identity and national culture in France, and accelerated the promotion of patriotism by the socialist government. At the European level, whereas the death of nations has been predicted along with the triumph of globalisation, nations and nationalism make a spectacular come back in public debates, and put most European left-wing parties in an embarrassing position.

Politics from below in Turkey and beyond
The Symposium on Politics from Below in Turkey and beyond seeks to identify and discuss, in comparative perspective, the dynamics, effects and modes of “politics from below”. We use the broad wording “politics from below” in a heuristic fashion, in order to question classical definitions of the “political”. This framing aims to suggest different understandings of politics. Political science on Turkey and the wider region has long been dominated by top-down and macro approaches, addressing mainly national institutions, political leaders, public discourses and legislative productions.

In the aftermath of world war two, the Left gradually became suspicious of references to the nation, traditionally associated with rightwing ideologies. Yet in a time of identity debates and persistent collective attachment to nations, patriotism, sovereignty and nationalism are also increasingly used as political arguments.

Talking about “Arabs”. Echoes from different Europes
The immigration emergency, the Cologne attacks and other reports on the Arab populations in Europe generate commentaries across the continent. The concentration of unwelcoming attitudes towards Middle Eastern newcomers in Central and Eastern Europe is seen by some as the evidence of “a split of mentalities” between the “old Europe” and its ex-communist states. There is a need, however, to complexify these dichotomies by looking into how concretely knowledge on the Middle East is produced in different European countries. The Oriental Institute in Prague is organizing a workshop on this issue, seeking to investigate the nexus between three different fields of knowledge production and diffusion in today’s Europe: media, academic and policy-making.

Private actors in politics and policy-making
Trespassers producing norms?
At a time when a growing literature documents a rising involvement of private actors such as business associations, professional associations, multinational corporations or law firms in the creation of public policy, it seems crucial to study the practices of this involvement, as well as to study the meaning of such developments for the very distinction that social sciences have been making between the private and the public spheres, the private and the public actors. In other words, how do the concrete modalities of this involvement reshape the definition of roles and statuses of private and public actors in politics and policy?
