The cross cutting conference theme, Environmental Changes in Historical Perspective, is inscribed in transnational and transdisciplinary approaches, a challenge to the current academic research and debate in environmental sciences and humanities.

First Iberian Colloquium on Landscape

Landscapes present themselves as sceneries we have inherited, where we live, and from where we draw the resources needed to subsist as a civilisation and as a species. The result of our actions on this heritage will be the legacy to our descendants. In the beginning of the third millennium, the interest in the topic of landscape is increasingly important, transforming this discipline in a research platform where several fields of knowledge intersect. The aim of this colloquium is to reflect about the diversity of multidisciplinary aspects, analytical methods, and intervention techniques related to the study of landscape, establishing a forum focused on the future relationship between humanity and landscape.

Cosmopolitanismes urbains : questions méthodologiques et théoriques

This worshop seeks to investigate cosmopolitanism through an urban lens. It aims to provide a situated approach to cosmopolitanism, using the analytical framework of urban and social theory alongside social geography and building upon empirical research. Our purpose is to frame a grounded theory of urban cosmopolitanism that would take the paradigms and empirical findings of various social sciences into account. Our interest lies in a cosmopolitanism of encounters incarnated in contacts, mobilities and cultural consumption and the spatial dimension of the social and power relations that are at stake in cosmopolitan encounters. We shall focus on cities as sites, but also actors in processes of cosmopolitanisation.

The research will explore how young migrants experience, use and appropriate public spaces, including cyberspace, in the Lao fast-developing capital, Vientiane. How are their social maps structured and negotiated in relation to public spaces? How do they interact and perceive their relationship with the local youth born and bred in Vientiane? How do they coexist and socialise in urban public spaces?

This project will explore how young Chinese cosplayers engage with the public at large to express new identities in spaces that are heavily regulated by social and political censoring mechanisms. MODSCAPES deals with rural landscapes produced by large-scale agricultural development and colonization schemes planned in the 20th century throughout Europe and beyond. Conceived in different political and ideological contexts, such schemes were pivotal to nation-building and state-building policies, and to the modernization of the countryside. They provided a testing ground for the ideas and tools of environmental and social scientists, architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects and artists, which converged around a shared challenge.

Lost and Transformed Cities: a digital perspective

The city is by definition a living entity. It translates itself into a collectiveness of individuals who share and act on a material, social and cultural setting. Its history is one of dreams, achievements and loss. As such, it also bears a history of identity. To know the history of cities is to understand our own place in the contemporaneity. The past is always seen through the eyes of the present and can only be understood as such. On the occasion of the 261^st anniversary of the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, we invite scholars and experts in the fields of heritage studies, digital humanities, history, history of art and information technology to share and debate their experience and knowledge on digital heritage.

International Geographical Congress 2016

The relationship between heritage and tourism has essentially been analyzed as a “defensive” one. Even if the economic contribution of tourism is considered necessary to insure the conservation of heritage sites and objects, tourism is at the same time suspected to be invasive, destructive and dangerous for the sites’ “authenticity”. This session aims at understanding the processes through which tourism (seen as a system of places, stakeholders/actors, public, practices and imaginaries) becomes a major “heritage producing machine” and identifying what these new production are.

Revealing Ordinary Jerusalem (1840–1940)

New archives and perspectives on urban citizenship and global entanglements

The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Therefore all participants are kindly requested to stay in Rethymno for the whole duration of the symposium.

Migrants in Global Metropolises

Séminaire de recherche et doctoral MAGMET

L'objectif de ce séminaire consiste à articuler transformations urbaines, migration et mondialisation pour mieux comprendre la fabrication des villes-mondes plurielles, marquées par de très forts taux d’immigration et de part de population étrangère. Partant des pratiques et des représentations des différents acteurs sociaux, économiques et politiques qui produisent et vivent dans ces villes, il s’intéresse aux modalités d’incarnation socio-spatiales de la diversité, ainsi qu’à sa gestion. En pensant simultanément les connexions et les ancrages, en jouant systématiquement sur l’articulation des échelles, l’enjeu du séminaire est d’élaborer un cadre analytique théorique comparatif afin de réfléchir aux modes de transformation des métropoles plurielles, engagées dans des dynamiques de mondialisation, en fonction de leur insertion dans les réseaux globalisés, de leur taille démographique et de leurs héritages et contextes politiques.

The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

Le cycle de conférences MIGDEVRI entend établir des échanges approfondis entre chercheurs, praticiens et agents publics dans le domaine des migrations et de la mobilité sous régionale au sein de l’espace communautaire CEDEAO. Il est focalisé sur les mobilités Sud-Sud quelque peu délaissées par la recherche scientifique. Cinq axes de recherche sont proposés en priorité, tant pour les participants aux Ateliers de recherche MIGDEVRI que pour les candidats aux bourses de résidence junior.
