The 5th international congress “Sport, doping and society” is organized by the Spanish Agency for Health Protection in Sport (AEPSAD) and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). Under the theme “Think Clean”, there will be presented the results of scientific researches and new methodologies in the field of doping in sport from the specific perspective of Human and Social Sciences. We believe that this initiative will contribute to identify the factors that influence the use of doping substances and methods. From this knowledge we hope to foster future prevention and doping control and to promote ethical behavior in sport.

The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance

"Forma" Revista d'estudis comparatius. Art, literatura, pensament

Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

Images and uses of the people in African literatures and of the diaspora

Le « peuple » désigne, généralement, des couches sociales démunies aux contours indéfinis, aux identités mouvantes et corvéables à merci. Mot polysémique et polyvalent, « le peuple » est aussi perçu, entre autres dénominations, comme synonyme de populace, foule, masse anonyme, bas peuple, petit peuple, gens du peuple, ceux d’en-bas, basses classes et classes laborieuses. Dans les pratiques sociales comme dans les usages linguistiques, est dit « populaire » ce qui s’exclut du modèle élevé, à l’instar du parler non conventionnel rebelle au niveau de langue courant ou soutenu. Souvent associé aux marginaux, aux déclassés, aux laissés-pour-compte, le « peuple » est un sujet récurrent de l’histoire littéraire universelle, tout comme de la création littéraire et artistique d’Afrique et de la diaspora, de la période coloniale à nos jours.

Letters from women in medieval Europe (11th-15th century)

Miroir de l’âme mais aussi instrument de communication et d’action politique, la lettre est un objet d’étude qui suscite, depuis quelques années, une attention particulière. La correspondance des femmes est cependant un domaine encore peu exploré et, en dépit de travaux ponctuels sur la production épistolaire de quelques reines, princesses ou nobles dames, rares sont les études d’ensemble sur ce sujet. Pourtant, les lettres de femmes contiennent de précieuses informations sur leur vie, leurs aspirations, et leur rôle au sein de la société. Consacrées aux documents de la pratique mais aussi aux lettres fictives que l’on trouve dans l’historiographie et la littérature, les communications présentées lors de ce colloque examineront les spécificités de ces divers écrits.

The Biocultural Dimensions of the Everyday life that was held within the framework of the 4^th Congress on Latin American Anthropology (Mexico, 2015). We invite to this seminar Biocultural Dimensions of the Everyday life researchers interested in the study of the body, of the human embodiment, of the techniques of the body, of the linkages between bodily action and material culture, of the human/animal co-actions, of the nutrition, of the health, of the bodily education, of the dance, of the sexuality and of other fragments of everyday life that invite to think about the complexity of the human being-in-the-world.

IV International Conference of Myth Criticism

Myth and Emotions

Along with rational logic there is an emotional logic, responsible for many actions that we carry out. Myth Criticism tends to tackle mythical stories from a structural, social and historical perspective. However, it often ignores the emotional component. It seems as if the affective dimension, particularly active in our contemporary society, is not considered relevant in the studies of mythology. The Conference will examine the function undertaken by emotions in the structure of mythical stories and in the processes of mythification of characters and historical events. The object of the study will focus on ancient, medieval and modern myths in contemporary literature and art (since 1900).

Modernisation and the challenge of practice: alternative political spaces (Europe, Americas, 18th-19th centuries)

Les espaces alternatifs du politique (Europe, Amérique, XVIIIe- XIXe siècle)

En partant d’études de cas empruntées aux espaces européen et américain, ces journées se proposent d’étudier les interactions conflictuelles entre des acteurs ou des groupes d’acteurs et les autorités ou l’État, afin de réexaminer le paradigme de la modernisation des sociétés européenne et américaine aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècle. De ce fait, le choix d’une périodisation au-delà de la décennie révolutionnaire ne vise pas à reprendre le discours d’une politisation qui commencerait avec la Révolution française avant de se diffuser tout au long du XIX^e siècle, mais bien plutôt à s’intéresser aux permanences d’une appropriation du politique par les acteurs dès l’époque moderne, et la possibilité de la construction d’espaces politiques qui ne sont pas ceux qui sont privilégiés dans les analyses classiques de la politisation.

The reception of his works and his influence on European literature from the Middle-Ages to the present time

With the contribution of specialists in several branches of humanities, our purpose is to bring to light some neglected or partially studied aspects of this great classical thinker and exemplary figure of scientific eclecticism, who played a great part in the universalization of knowledge. We will pay special attention to the way in which Boethius’ scientific and cultural legacy was included in the works of other European authors, and was renewed according to the feelings, anxieties and aspirations particular to every age and historical context.
