The history of sciences, the history of text
As in previous years, we will study: How sources bear the mark of the environments in which they were produced. We will ask the question of how the documents attest knowledge. We will be interested in the history of writing by compilation. We will carry out research on the organization that the actors have given to the recorded knowledge, looking at the parts in which they have structured their texts.

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE (Science, philosophie, histoire) teams that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

Seminar - Epistemology and methodology
History and Philosophy of Chemistry
The philosophy of chemistry is a little known reflection domain, expanding, opening up new opportunities for reflection on science and technology, often different and complementary of the perspectives opened by the philosophy of physics, biology and mathematics. This seminar will, in particular, be a place for exchanges between historians, philosophers, chemists, scientists from diverse backgrounds, students and anyone interested in the subject. It aims to promote dialogue between philosophers and historians and give voice to different historical and philosophical approaches in respect of their singularities.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the “Arab mathematics”, understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science “mathematized” of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi.

Porter un regard neuf sur de grands thèmes collectifs, penser autrement la place de l’homme dans la société et interpréter les grandes transformations de nos civilisations à la lumière de la sagesse chrétienne, voici quelques-uns des défis qui animent, chaque semaine, les équipes des mardis des Bernardins. Pour départager l’information superficielle des enjeux véritables, pour dégager des perspectives et anticiper l’avenir, ces tables rondes n’ont qu’un seul parti pris : replacer l’homme au centre des enjeux de notre temps.

Nature's workshop. The production of material knowledge and the material production of knowledge.
La journée d'études internationale « L’atelier de la nature. Production des savoirs matériels, production matérielle des savoirs » vise à penser les relations entre l’expérience in situ en plein air, telle qu’elle a été construite par une variété d’acteurs (savants, voyageurs, peintres, habitants) en la mettant en relation avec le travail dans « l’atelier » pris au sens large de lieu de travail, dans lequel la nature peut être transformée (laboratoires), recréée (peintres), classifiée (savoirs antiquaires et collectionneurs).

The history and philosophy of psychiatry in the 20th century - Franco-German perspectives

La journée d’étude que nous proposons a pour but de réunir des jeunes chercheurs, doctorants et post-doctorants, autour du thème de la circulation des savoirs relevant du champ de la psychiatrie entre la France et les pays germanophones – RFA, RDA, Suisse alémanique et Autriche – tout au long du XXe siècle. La pluralité à la fois disciplinaire et méthodologique constituent le fil conducteur qui lie entre eux les participants de nationalités différentes (France, Allemagne, Italie, Autriche, Suisse). Les chercheurs impliqués dans cette initiative présentent en effet des projets de recherche qui – tout en partageant un intérêt à la fois historique et épistémologique pour la psychiatrie – se situent à la frontière entre histoire des sciences, philosophie et anthropologie.

Truth in the history of medicine
Charles et Monique Morazé prize 2016
Créé en 2013 par la Fondation maisons des sciences de l'Homme, le prix couronne des travaux des chercheurs confirmés traitant soit de la thématique sciences et société, soit de la problématique éducation et société. Le prix 2016 est attribué à Madame Anne Marie Moulin, médecin et philosophe des sciences, directrice de recherche émérite au CNRS. À l’occasion de la cérémonie de remise du prix qui aura lieu le 11 octobre 2016 à la Maison Suger, Madame Anne Marie Moulin donnera une conférence intitulée : La « vérité » en histoire de la médecine.

Season 6 - November 2016-January 2017
Le rendez-vous mensuel du Centre Alexandre Koyré, « les débats du CAK », sont de retour pour cette rentrée. Ils se déroulent un mercredi par mois, de 10h à 12h, au Centre Alexandre Koyré. La formule de ces rendez-vous est très simple. À l'occasion de la sortie récente d'un ouvrage d'histoire des sciences et des techniques (au sens large), nous invitons son auteur(e) à débattre avec deux discutants privilégiés, ainsi qu'avec l'ensemble de l'auditoire. Ces échanges sont systématiquement suivis d'un moment convivial autour d'un buffet.

This workshop brings together Japanese primatology and anthropology of life, by presenting and discussing common points of scientific and philosophical interest in the study of chimpanzees, humans’ closest living relatives. What are the scientific and personal conceptions of chimpanzees’ lives held by primatologists? Conversely, are humans capable of accurately making inferences on how chimpanzees might perceive the lives of other beings around them?

Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture
In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

Aside from the biological processes to which it is subjected from birth to death, human existence is characterized by the permanent effort all individuals and groups make to influence and control these processes, in order to live together. Whether occurring during a rite of passage or whether part of the interactions of everyday life, this construction invites us to question the various manners forms are made – be them “Life Forms” or “Forms of Life” – by carefully looking at the diversity of processes through which norms and rules become established .

Thinking and writing the history of psychoanalysis and the humanities
The work of John Forrester
John Forrester (1949-2015) fut l’historien de la psychanalyse le plus marquant de sa génération. Depuis sa thèse sur les rapports entre les sciences du langage et la psychanalyse il s’attacha à inscrire celle-ci pleinement dans l’histoire des sciences. Des rencontres décisives avec Thomas Kuhn, Michel Foucault et Jacques Lacan scandaient son parcours et inspiraient sa manière inimitable de faire dialoguer dans ses travaux et dans son enseignement plusieurs approches et traditions intellectuelles. Professeur au département d’histoire et de philosophie des sciences à l’université de Cambridge, sa renommée était internationale, la plupart de ses travaux étant traduit dans une dizaine des langues. Ce colloque est un hommage au travail de John Forrester : il présente les acquis et les ouvertures d’une œuvre qui nous invite à penser et à écrire l’histoire de la psychanalyse et des sciences humaines d’une nouvelle manière.

Neurosciences and Cabbal - a possible dialogue?
La table ronde a pour objectif d’ouvrir un dialogue sur ces nouvelles perspective en confrontant les domaines apparemment très différents des sciences du cerveau et de la mystique religieuse. Moshe Idel, éminent expert des études sur la mystique juive, et Shahar Arzy, neuroscientifique cognitif et neurologue, proposent dans leur étude une intéressante clef de lecture de la Cabbale à travers les nouvelles recherches des neurosciences. Ils analysent en particulier l’expérience mystique des cabbalistes en déchiffrant les mécanismes et les techniques qui influencent leur système cognitif ; par exemple l’extase, caractérisée par une altération des fonctions neurocognitives qui enchaînent le soi au corps.
