  Traces and Memories of Slavery in the Atlantic World

  Dans Cultural Trauma: Slavery and the Formation of African American Identity (2001), Ron Eyerman explore la formation de l'identité africaine-américaine à travers le traumatisme culturel de l'esclavage. Au-delà de son impact direct sur celles et ceux qui ont subi l'esclavage, Eyerman considère qu'en tant que processus culturel, le traumatisme est « transmis par l'intermédiaire de diverses formes de représentation et associé à la formation d'une identité et à la construction d'une mémoire collectives ». Cette conférence internationale cherche à examiner les fondements, les mécanismes et l'étendue de ces processus mémoriels.

  The Emancipation of Bound Laborers in the Americas before the Abolition of Slavery

  What were the modalities of the emancipation of unfree workers? Which factors motivated the adoption of legislation regulating emancipations? Is it possible to establish a typology of the emancipators and of the emancipated servants and slaves? To what extent did slaves and indentured servants take part in their own liberation? Did the introduction of slavery provide any negotiating power to white servants, for instance by reducing their length of service? Did the practice of emancipation evolve in reaction to the advent of abolitionism, especially after the movement gained momentum and radicalized itself?

  Thémis Outre-Mer 2

  En 2014, le colloque « Thémis Outre-Mer » a porté sur la fabrique du droit colonial, l'adaptation et la pratique du droit dans les colonies à l'époque du premier empire colonial. Thémis Outre-Mer 2 poursuit des travaux de renouvellement et d'approfondissement en histoire du droit colonial en portant attention aux justices d'exception et justices spécialisées dans les espaces coloniaux modernes et contemporains. Ces justices ont complété le système ordinaire ou bien assuré l'existence d'une justice singulière et c'est bien le double intérêt de ce colloque que de vouloir comprendre le système judiciaire colonial dans sa globalité.
