In the workshop. Material, form and knowledge of artistic work (13th-19th centuries)
En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques. L’atelier sera ainsi le terrain d’expérimentation pour une archéologie matérielle, visuelle et intellectuelle de l’art. Le séminaire proposera des études de cas, menées à partir de travaux en cours, qui seront mises en perspective tout au long d’une enquête historiographique sur la notion d’atelier et les conditions de l’innovation, entre arts et savoirs.

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19th century.

Le but de ce projet — second volet d’une recherche commencée en 2014 — est de proposer un retour critique sur l’histoire des savoirs en prenant comme angle d’observation les pratiques savantes des archives. S’inscrivant dans la lignée des tendances actuelles des sciences sociales qui mettent en avant les conditions d’élaboration des savoirs, ce projet vise à interroger dans une perspective transnationale et transculturelle l’histoire des archives et l’histoire des savoirs dans leurs relations réciproques.
