The transition between antique sites and the building of the first churches
Reflections of processes of transformation
La problématique de la transition entre les sites antiques et l’édification des premières églises a été abordée depuis longtemps dans l’historiographie mais le renouvellement des méthodes et des questionnements en archéologie depuis une quinzaine d’années nous invite à refaire le point sur cette question en partageant nos expériences. Il ne s’agit plus de définir une norme en ce qui concerne la chronologie des réoccupations mais plutôt de s’interroger sur la manière d’aborder ces sites, d’y déceler des « comportements » similaires et de partager nos méthodes.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

Célébrant le douzième centenaire de l'élection épiscopale d'Agobard de Lyon (816-840), le colloque international Lyon carolingien mesure la part prise par Lyon dans l'empire de Louis le Pieux : la cité est une capitale intellectuelle et religieuse dont l'originalité vient relativiser l'uniformité du monde carolingien. Forte d'une tradition érudite exceptionnelle, incarnée par une bibliothèque épiscopale d'une extrême richesse, l'Église de Lyon résiste au centralisme franc tout en profitant du dynamisme politique du premier IXe siècle.

Glass in Western Europe AD 700-1600
8th International Congress of the French Association for the Archaeology of Glass
Archaeologists, historians, archaeometrists, restorers, glass professionals and enthusiasts will gather around a common topic: “Glass from the eighth to the sixteenth century in Western Europe”. During the 1980-1990’s, medieval glass was highlighted in history and archaeology but, one must recognize that since then, no significant state-of-the-art overview has been published. The increasing number of rescue and systematic excavations on medieval sites, along with the democratization of new conservation methods has allowed a considerable improvement and renewal of this thematic. If complete thoroughness is out of reach, then this congress intends to achieve an updated state of research. For this purpose, original works and thematic overviews, whether chronological or geographical, are expected on the subject of production, distribution and uses of medieval glass in Western Europe.

Ces journées d'études sur les discours et les pratiques de consolation, poursuivent l'enquête pluridisciplinaire selon un spectre large, invitant des spécialistes à proposer des lectures de corpus spécifiques en vue de la constitution d'une anthologie. Elles proposent une réflexion transséculaire sur la consolation vue comme un discours mais aussi une pratique.

9th international conference of doctoral students of the Byzantine world
Pour la neuvième année consécutive, les rencontres internationales des doctorants du monde byzantin seront organisées à Paris les 7 et 8 octobre 2016. Elles ont pour objectif de rassembler les doctorants de toutes disciplines en rapport avec la civilisation byzantine afin de leur permettre d'exposer leurs recherches et de renforcer les liens entre les jeunes chercheurs. Toute contribution en rapport avec le monde byzantin ou post-byzantin est susceptible d'intéresser le comité d'organisation.

Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption
Contrasting with the Prehistory for which the question of the beginning of the consumption of dairy products is of critical importance, few studies are devoted to the production and consumption of these products during medieval and post-medieval periods. However, dairy products, especially cheese, are key components of the Mediterranean diet. Sometimes disregarded, sometimes recommended by dieticians, the latter are traded both at local and international scale. Therefore it seems necessary to organize a workshop on "Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption".

Glass in Western Europe AD 700-1600
8th International Congress of the French Association for the Archaeology of Glass
Lors de ces rencontres, archéologues, historiens, archéomètres, conservateurs-restaurateurs, professionnels du verre et passionnés se réuniront autour d’un thème commun : le verre du VIIIe au XVIe siècle en Europe occidentale. Mise sur le devant de la scène dans les années 1980-1990, la période médiévale n’a pas suscité depuis lors de nouvel état de l’art dans le domaine de l’histoire et de l’archéologie du verre. La multiplication des opérations préventives et programmées sur des sites médiévaux, ainsi que le développement des méthodes de conservation, ont pourtant contribué à l’enrichissement et au renouvellement des sources archéologiques. Sans prétendre à l’exhaustivité, ce colloque propose toutefois de réaliser un état de la recherche en sollicitant des travaux inédits et des synthèses thématiques, chronologiques ou géographiques sur la production, la diffusion et les usages du matériau verre au Moyen Âge.
