On the outskirts of the capital - feminist and homosexual movements in regions
L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de réunir historien.ne.s et sociologues afin de souligner dans une double perspective disciplinaire, toute la diversité de ces mouvements et de leurs militant.e.s en faisant travailler le jeu des échelles régionale et nationale. De la sorte, nous souhaitons effectuer des comparaisons entre espaces de contestation. Il convient également d’examiner les liens, les transferts de représentations et de valeurs puis les logiques d’entraînement et d’imitation. Surtout, il s’agit également d’interroger les liens – d’alliances, de rejets - historiques qui existent entre les mouvements féministes et homosexuels.

“Medicalized” Childbirth as a Public Problem
Risk Culture(s), Gender Politics, Techno-Reflexivities
Obstetrical knowledge, technologies and practices have dramatically transformed women’s reproductive experiences worldwide. Medicalization of childbirth was accelerated in the XXth century by the displacement of childbirth from home to the hospital, and by the generalization of surgical techniques and pharmaceutical products. Medical interventionism took multiple, situated forms. Relying on cross-cultural investigations and field data from diverse national contexts (France, USA, Italy, Brazil, Senegal, Turkey, Switzerland, Canada…), this international workshop investigates how “technological” birth came into being, and how it is produced, problematized, framed, and negotiated in the XXIst century.

Student movements and (post-)colonial emancipations
Transnational itineraries, dialogues and programmes
This conference will discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making. It will also consider the impact of the new multilateral management of conflicts (through the United Nations, but also the European Union) on European and North American societies, including on young people and student movements, whose membership often goes far beyond national spheres.

L'Ecole d'été « Communicating politics. Media, Communication, Activism from the French Revolution to the present » se tiendra à Padoue, en Italie, du 19 au 24 septembre 2016. Le programme sera consacré à l'étude, dans une perspective historique, des liens entre les médias et la politique, de la Révolution française à nos jours et dans différentes aires et régions géographiques. L'enjeu de l'école d'été est de s'interroger sur la manière dont l'étude de ces liens permet d'enrichir nos connaissances en histoire des médias et en histoire politique.

7th study day of the "Belgium and the contemporary world" group
La VIIe journée du groupe de contact « Belgique et mondes contemporains » interrogera les mobilisations sociales transnationales, du XIXe au XXIe siècle, porteuses de revendications sociales, éthiques, culturelles, écologiques, etc. Depuis les combats pour l’extension du droit de suffrage ou la journée de huit heures jusqu’aux mobilisations du forum social mondial et aux marches pour le climat en passant par l’internationalisation des actions syndicales, de nombreux cas d’étude permettent d’illustrer les connexions et les interactions transfrontalières, encore facilitées par l’accélération des transports et les nouvelles technologies de l’information.

Les textes de cette œuvre collective ont en effet revigoré la critique sociale et la pensée politique radicale, ce qui en a fait réfléchir – ou affolé – plus d'un.

Diverse Cultural and Religious Ways of Thinking. A Dialogue
Our world is made up of a great variety of cultural and religious traditions. The question is, how can they enter into dialogue when they each have a unique view of reality and a distinct way of thinking? Scholars and political figures have wrestled with this question, which is critical in our globalized world. Productive dialogue is compromised when people of different cultures come together in a spirit of confrontation brought on by differences in worldview. Such confrontational attitudes seem to be increasing at a rapid and alarming rate. This Conference is based on the premise that cultural and religious differences, with their distinct and sometimes implacable features, are not in themselves barriers to genuine dialogue. Rather, they are seen as assets that can enable us as human beings to gain a more accurate understanding of ourselves and others and thereby form a common vision for human society.

À l’heure des bilans pour la présidence Obama, cette journée d’étude propose d’interroger les liens entre minorités ethno-raciales et politique dans cette Amérique « mosaïque » où la plupart des groupes portent des revendications et cherchent à promouvoir des intérêts qui leur sont, bien souvent, spécifiques. L’objectif de la journée sera donc d’analyser les interactions entre les groupes ethno-raciaux et les différentes sphères du pouvoir politique, au niveau national mais également local, pendant la période Obama qui s’achève.

The challenge of political philosophy today
Le renouveau de la philosophie politique, à partir des années soixante et soixante-dix, a été fortement lié à la critique des phénomènes totalitaires et à une prise de distance polémique à l’égard des diverses philosophies de l’histoire ou d’une certaine pratique des sciences sociales. Que signifie dès lors, pour la philosophie politique, l’éloignement progressif du moment anti-totalitaire qui en avait favorisé la réémergence ? Quelle est son rôle possible dans la connaissance des dynamiques propres des sociétés modernes et dans les débats sur les méthodes qui peuvent fonder cette connaissance ? Quel éclairage peut-elle apporter dans les réflexions normatives sur la démocratie et les divers défis auxquels font face les sociétés modernes ?

Europe and Asia: challenges and crisis-management
Further to the first Europe-Asia conferences exploring regional regime dynamics (France, 2004), policies of regional cooperation (Korea, 2005), interregional competition (France, 2012) and the limits of regional constructions (Kazakhstan, 2014), this 2016 edition will look at the reciprocal understanding of regions and how that is conducive to their capacity (or lack thereof) to monitor crises they undergo, both specific crises and interregional ones. Papers must address original research, in regional dynamics of Asia and Europe, since the end of the cold war and focus on one area among.
