Notre journée d'études internationale propose un tour d'horizon qui, à partir d'une série d'exemples, nous permettra de mieux apprécier la situation actuelle. Patrimoine protégé ou menacé, quels critères de sélection ? Quels outils pour parer à l'urgence, conserver et partager la mémoire ?

    Les villes du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient comptent parmi les plus vieilles du monde, où la nature a toujours eu une place privilégiée : les jardins de Babylone, de Damas, de Marrakech et de Bagdad, dont les modèles sont issus à la fois de l’héritage perse et des descriptions du Coran, ont marqué les imaginaires et étaient des éléments-clés de la ville islamique (Gillot 2006). Au-delà de la fonction d’agrément, la fonction agricole, à travers l’agriculture urbaine et périurbaine, a toujours été constitutive du fait urbain dans le monde arabe (Nasr & Padilla 2004).(...)

    Revealing Ordinary Jerusalem (1840–1940)

    New archives and perspectives on urban citizenship and global entanglements

    The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Therefore all participants are kindly requested to stay in Rethymno for the whole duration of the symposium.

    Refugees in the City

    The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.
