The Spanish and Portuguese in the German war effort
Working in / for Germany during the Second World War (1940-1945)
L’effort de guerre allemand demande l’emploi d’une main-d’œuvre de plus en plus nombreuse ; on estime qu’environ treize millions de personnes furent contraintes de travailler pour l’économie allemande dans le IIIe Reich et dix millions dans les pays occupés. La journée d’études prétend attirer l’attention sur la question du travail forcé d’Espagnols et de Portugais et lancer les bases pour l’approfondissement futur de cette thématique, de dimension européenne.

The processes of politico-religious assignation in the Syrian conflict
Cette journée d'étude sera consacrée à la violence des processus d’assignation politico-religieux dans le conflit syrien. L’État syrien, ainsi que différentes factions du camp de l’opposition ont dès le début de la révolte en 2011 entrepris de mobiliser les individus sur la base de leurs identités confessionnelles et/ou ethniques. Observable chez les « minoritaires » alaouites, druzes et chrétiens sommés de soutenir le régime de Bashar al-Assad, cette politique a également des conséquences délétères au sein de la « majorité » sunnite. Ne se cantonnant pas au domaine de la mobilisation politico-militaire, elle s’accompagne de la tentative d’imposer par la contrainte une réforme morale de chaque individu, ainsi qu’une homogénéisation des croyances, des pratiques et des manières d’être « citoyen », « musulman », « alaouite », etc.

Thursdays at the Institut historique allemand
Avec son cycle de conférences des « jeudis », l’Institut historique allemand (IHA) propose des sujets de l’actualité internationale en sciences humaines et sociales. Chaque conférence est suivie d’un commentaire et d’un débat afin de faire ressortir les spécificités théoriques et méthodologiques des différentes traditions historiographiques. Les sujets traités représentent donc des questions fondamentales de l’historiographie ainsi que des axes de la recherche actuelle à l’IHA, dont l’histoire intellectuelle, sociale et culturelle de la politique. L’IHA invite les chercheurs venant de tous horizons à participer à ce forum d’échanges où les controverses et les discussions scientifiques concourent à enrichir la pensée et les connaissances.

Rescue and figures of the righteous
Appraisals and perspectives on the regional and European levels
Les Justes parmi les nations constituent une catégorie que l'histoire doit questionner. Titre décerné par l'État d'Israël depuis 1962, partie émergée et médiatisée de l'ensemble plus vaste des sauveteurs - rescuers incarnant une des trois postures face à la Shoah à côté des perpetrators et des bystanders -, les Justes renvoient surtout à la dynamique mémorielle de la deuxième guerre mondiale et du génocide des juifs. C'est pourquoi ces journées d'étude aborderont la question plutôt sous l'angle du sauvetage - terme à discuter - ou de la résistance civile. Pour autant l'histoire des Justes a suscité des enquêtes et réuni des matériaux dont les usages interrogent l'historien.

Chaque séance sera consacrée à un ouvrage récent présenté par son auteur, dans un exposé en français ou en anglais.

Wars and armies - manufacturing the city
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un cycle consacré aux conflits. Après un premier opus en 2014 consacré aux conflits et progrès scientifiques et techniques, ce sont les relations entre conflits, urbanismes et territoires qui sont au cœur du présent colloque. Quatre sessions spécifiques seront traitées : les fortifications : entre défense et développement urbain ; infrastructures militaires et urbanisme (avec un focus sur les bases OTAN) ; les reconstructions ; les traces urbaines des conflits et les reconversions.

L’histoire de la colonisation est parsemée de manifestations culturelles glorifiant l’hégémonie française. L’exposition coloniale de 1931 est, de ce point de vue, édifiante. Bien au-delà de ces expositions d’envergures, la situation coloniale a conditionné le développement des arts, du cinéma, de l’architecture mais aussi de l’enseignement. Dès 1951, Georges Balandier qualifiait la colonisation de « fait social total » et la culture, dans son sens le plus large, érigée en moyen de domination ultime, en fut l’un des chaînons. Cette série de séminaires aura, dès lors, pour objectif d’interroger, par des discussions thématiques – les festivals, le cinéma, la photographie, l’architecture et l’enseignement seront abordés - et en réunissant des chercheurs, doctorants, docteurs et artistes de divers horizons disciplinaires, la relation complexe et cruciale entre culture et colonisation.

Tout au long de son œuvre, il a jeté de nombreuses passerelles entre l’anthropologie, l’archéologie et l’histoire. Il a renouvelé la réflexion sur la place de l’économie, du politique, du juridique, du religieux et des rapports sociaux.

Conflicts of memory: arts, history, commemorations
This conference will focus not only on historical events which fuel conflicting memories, but also on works of art – including those produced at the margins of institutions – which encourage or undermine the consensual interpretations of the past. Do artworks promoting a reinterpretation of the past help foster a new type of relationship between the present and the past? Do they open onto a different future? Some works spark off debates and suggest that memory is imbued with potentially irreconcilable sentiments. Historical materials and artworks convey this tension, articulating the gap between dominant and dominated memories. Does art help resolve conflicts or does it perpetuate them? Comparing different artists’ original takes on similar historical events may help us better understand the stakes behind conflicting memories.

New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949
The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has recently seen a revival of interest among historians. This two-day international conference will showcase new research from scholars based across the globe and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies.

Histoire contemporaine d’un enjeu politique et scientifique
Ce colloque a pour objectif de rassembler des chercheurs abordant dans leurs travaux historiques la question de l’action sur les temporalités, lorsque le temps est une catégorie explicitement utilisée (long-terme, simultanéité, attente, élaboration de séquences temporelles). Il entend dépasser l’étude du temps et des temporalités comme simple cadre ou arrière-plan de l’évolution historique des sociétés, pour encourager une historicisation du temps comme catégorie d’action à l’époque contemporaine.

Rock and Violence in Europe (1950's-1980's)
This event is the first of two conferences, the second of which will take place in 2019 under the sponsorship of the History department at California State University, Long Beach. The first component, at Rouen, concentrates on Europe, while the second part, on the same theme, will focus on the situation in the Americas. The purpose of these two events is to gain an understanding of the place of rock in contemporary culture and to define its significance and impact in our societies. From this starting point, the conferences will also endeavor to consider the part of legend that encompasses the myth of rock music. The association between rock and violence, however fantastical and artificially constructed, is a given which has penetrated the music's history during the second part of the twentieth century; in some ways, the recent dramatic events at the Bataclan have highlighted this in an extremely tragic manner.

Alors que l’actuelle crise migratoire, considérée comme la plus importante depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, se retrouve au cœur de l’agenda international parce qu’elle affecte la société globale, cette conférence internationale veut réunir des chercheurs et des spécialistes venant des différents domaines scientifiques (histoire, anthropologie, sciences juridiques, sociologie, relations internationales et sciences politiques) afin de débattre sur le thème des politiques sectorielles des différents États européens liées aux réfugiés tout au long du XXe siècle.

L'an V des Révolutions au prisme de l'économique et du social
This colloquium, organized in Beirut as part of the WAFAW program, aims to critically take part in a debate over the socio-economic undergrounds of the “political crises” in the region, a scarcely explored angle when dealing with this issue. It will base its contribution on investigations and original corpuses. Its purpose is to better understand how the Arab, Iranian, Turkish and other political societies observed are workedby highly singular processes (such as the importance of oil, of migration economy, or of war economies) but also amenable to an unequal globalization of exchanges. How (and not why) does the economy play into these political dynamics?

Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century
In the workshop on "Accidents and the role of the state" we want to discuss, from a historical perspective, the changing relationship between accidents and the modern state during the 20th century. Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) joint research project on military accidents in France and Germany in the twentieth century. We are therefore especially interested in proposals that deal with the role of the military. However, relevant topics for the workshop could, of course, also come from the realm of the histories of technology, of environment, of medicine, or of the rise of the modern state. We are interested both in presentations of case studies as well as in more conceptual approaches on the topic. Contributions that deal with accidents in German and French history are highly welcome. However, the call is by no means limited to historians of France or Germany.

The "Face" of First World War Battlefields and Battles
The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.

Reconstruction and Resettlement in the Wake of War
This two-day workshop will examine the interlinked processes of post-war urban reconstruction and population resettlement. Extending chronologically from the American Civil War to the mid-twentieth century, and covering a broad array of geographic locations, from North America to Europe, the Middle East and East Asia, it explores how war-torn urban environments have been rebuilt and repopulated. From the mid-nineteenth century, towns and cities increasingly became the pivots of large-scale military action, and urban residents from Atlanta to Paris, Warsaw and Tokyo felt the full force of modern weaponry. But as destruction and displacement gave way to reconstruction and resettlement, the residents of these war-afflicted urban centres faced further challenges. By exploring how they returned and reconstructed their shattered homes, this workshop seeks to understand the long-term effects of conflict on the social dynamics of communities.

Occupied Societies in Western Europe: Conflict and Encounter in the 20th Century
The history of Western Europe in the first half of the 20th Century was shaped by numerous contradictions: by conflicts and interdependencies, proximity and distance, violence and co-operation. Many of these elements can be identified in the structures and dynamics of Western European societies under German occupation. After all, the relationship between occupiers and the occupied cannot simply be reduced to "collaboration" and "resistance", in contrast to the suggestions of an older historiography.

Order in War. Gendarmeries and Police facing WWI
During the First World War, as peacetime economies were transformed into war-focused production systems, European law- enforcement agencies had to adapt to new conditions. The wartime reorganizations of police forces need to be understood comparatively. The First World War set a series of similar requirements in all European countries at war and, to some extent, in some neutral countries also. This conference aims to open new perspectives rather than bringing full and final responses. This is a particularly broad, complex and new historiographic field: the history of law enforcement institutions in Europe in a specific context - specifically total war, the kind of conflict that significantly fostered forms of disorder. We will focus particularly on the diversity of forces, from military to civil police, posted or not on the front line, in belligerent or neutral countries, in metropoles or empires.
