  Transformed urban spaces and gender issues in Arab and Mediterranean societies

  Tout en privilégiant la prise en compte des rapports de genre et les approches comparatives, le colloque insistera sur les processus de transformation des espaces et de leurs fonctions. L’espace est ici entendu dans un double sens : celui qui l’indexe aux lieux et aux paysages, celui qui renvoie à une délimitation abstraite pour dire, par exemple, l’espace politique ou l’espace littéraire. Les contributions de chercheurs, mais aussi d’autres types d’acteurs (associations, artistes …), ayant pour terrain les sociétés arabes et méditerranéennes seront privilégiées sans exclure d’autres régions du monde.

  Ships of the desert

  The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium

  Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du I^er millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

  La publication en 1865 de la traduction complète de la Bible en arabe à Beyrouth, accompagnée de sa large diffusion, sous l’égide des missionnaires de l’American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) avec le concours de savants du Liban, reste une étape charnière de l’histoire religieuse et intellectuelle du Proche Orient. Les conséquences de cette traduction dépassent outre, en effet, le champ du religieux et du théologique pour atteindre l’Homme et son rôle dans la société : le politique au sens large. Que cette traduction ait été menée à bonne fin peut alors être perçu comme le signe d’une société en évolution,d’autant plus que des musulmans ont été appelés à y collaborer aux côtés de chrétiens.

  Revealing Ordinary Jerusalem (1840–1940)

  New archives and perspectives on urban citizenship and global entanglements

  The Open Jerusalem project aims to unlock and connect different archives and sources in order to investigate the ordinary entangled history of a global city through the lens of the concept of urban citizenship (citadinité). The objective is to produce historical narratives focusing on the way residents interacted with each other, inhabited and appropriated space(s). The symposium intends to be a forum for deepening discussions and opening scientific debates, based on contributions by scholars specializing in related topics, urban historians and specialists of the region. Therefore all participants are kindly requested to stay in Rethymno for the whole duration of the symposium.

  Refugees in the City

  The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.
