  Rethinking pictures

  A transatlantic dialogue

  On the occasion of the launch of Picturing, the first volume of the Terra Foundation Essays, a new publication series exploring themes of critical importance to the history of arts and visual culture of the United States, the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte, Paris, and the Terra Foundation for American Art are jointly organizing a conference to further the transatlantic dialogue about what pictures are and what they do. This conference invites speakers to reflect on the differences and convergences between the intellectual traditions of visual studies and Bildwissenschaft. Are there ways to think about pictures anew by bringing these models more closely together?  Does the move away from visuality towards the material offer possibilities for overcoming early differences between these two approaches?

  Social photography and documentaries in the 1930s

  L’engagement des photographes dans les structures de la gauche révolutionnaire des années 1930 est aujourd’hui encore une zone d’ombre de l’histoire de la photographie et de la presse illustrée. Pour de nombreux photographes, la photographie représentait pourtant le médium révolutionnaire par excellence. En travaillant pour la presse illustrée communiste (Regards, L’Humanité, Ce Soir) et en s’engageant dans l’Association des écrivains et artistes révolutionnaires (AEAR), ils défendaient une vision politique de leur activité, considérant la photographie comme une « arme de classe ».

  The 19th century and the future. Thinking, representing, and dreaming the future in the 19th century

  On a souvent remarqué que le XIX^e siècle a été le premier à se penser en tant que siècle, et le premier aussi à se désigner par un numéral. Une autre de ses caractéristiques, c’est qu’il ne s’est pas centré autour d’une qualification unique, comme a fini par le faire le siècle des Lumières, mais qu’il a, au contraire, multiplié les appellations censées le caractériser. Deux précédents congrès de notre société ayant déjà entamé la réflexion d’ensemble, tant sur les représentations du XIX^e siècle par lui-même que sur ses représentations au siècle suivant, notre prochain congrès se propose de prolonger cette réflexion en abordant la question sous un angle complémentaire.
