Operative knowledges of matter, from Renaissance to industrialization
Following the renewal of the history of Technology and of the history of chemistry, this Research Seminar intends to explore operative knowledge in chemistry in connection with several fields including economics, political management, consumption and production processes. It seeks to shed a light, since the Early modern period, on various configurations where experimentation, exploration, transformation of Matter were held, through a wide range of technical devices.

The history of sciences, the history of innovation
Le but du séminaire est de proposer une réflexion approfondie sur l’histoire de la circulation des sciences et des innovations en Europe, ainsi que sur l’histoire des civilisations matérielles que cette circulation transforme. Ce séminaire est adossé aux activités de l’équipe d’histoire des sciences de l’université Pierre et Marie Curie et de l’axe 1 de recherche « L’Europe comme civilisation matérielle : flux, transitions, crises » du LabEx « Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe ». Si la période susceptible d’être couverte dans les interventions va de la fin du XVIIIe siècle à aujourd’hui, l’accent sera mis sur la période la plus récente.

The history of sciences, the history of text
As in previous years, we will study: How sources bear the mark of the environments in which they were produced. We will ask the question of how the documents attest knowledge. We will be interested in the history of writing by compilation. We will carry out research on the organization that the actors have given to the recorded knowledge, looking at the parts in which they have structured their texts.

The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE (Science, philosophie, histoire) teams that are interested in mathematics. Seminar - Epistemology and methodology
History and Philosophy of Chemistry
The philosophy of chemistry is a little known reflection domain, expanding, opening up new opportunities for reflection on science and technology, often different and complementary of the perspectives opened by the philosophy of physics, biology and mathematics. This seminar will, in particular, be a place for exchanges between historians, philosophers, chemists, scientists from diverse backgrounds, students and anyone interested in the subject. It aims to promote dialogue between philosophers and historians and give voice to different historical and philosophical approaches in respect of their singularities.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the “Arab mathematics”, understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science “mathematized” of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi.

Seminar - Epistemology and methodology
The experience of techniques: collections, reconstructions, knowledge and know-how
This seminar aims to reflect on the place of history of technical knowledge through the study of technical collections in their most concrete aspects (construction, classification, display devices, catering) while incorporating these artifacts to wider prospects, on the role of materiality and gesture in research and in the transmission of knowledge. The central theme of the seminar is the arts of making and sensory experience, designed as a participant of intellection process and the construction of subjectivity, in the past as today.

Nous proposons un séminaire qui interroge le lien entre incorporation et conflit à travers l’exemple de l’alimentation. Les comportements alimentaires montrent aujourd’hui une capacité à canaliser et à mettre en scène des conflits qui, partout en Europe, émergent et se déplacent très vite à partir de domaines très différents : de la critique antisystème à la dissension politique, religieuse et économique, de la mise en cause des distinctions de genre à celle de la médecine conventionnelle. Ces conflits incorporés constituent alors une source d’inventivité, collective et individuelle : nous prolongeons ainsi une tradition de recherche de l’université de Strasbourg qui fait du corps l’analyseur des pratiques réflexives et créatrices des individus et un des leviers qu’ils utilisent pour agir sur la société en la transformant.

In the workshop. Material, form and knowledge of artistic work (13th-19th centuries)
En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques. L’atelier sera ainsi le terrain d’expérimentation pour une archéologie matérielle, visuelle et intellectuelle de l’art. Le séminaire proposera des études de cas, menées à partir de travaux en cours, qui seront mises en perspective tout au long d’une enquête historiographique sur la notion d’atelier et les conditions de l’innovation, entre arts et savoirs.

Les commémorations du bicentenaire du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle, en 1993, ont permis de démontrer la validité d’une histoire historienne du Muséum. Depuis, la recherche s’est révélée féconde. Dans un cadre national et international, elle se lie aux développements de tout le champ, de l’histoire naturelle à l’histoire des sciences de l’Homme, dont l’anthropologie et la préhistoire, et met en valeur les ressources archivistiques et patrimoniales du Muséum.

Building a history of public health
Le séminaire se consacre à la construction de la santé publique du XIXe au XXIe siècle dans une perspective historienne. Il prend pour objet les processus politiques – de la police médicale à l’hygiène publique et à la gouvernance sanitaire contemporaine – et les dynamiques sociales à l’œuvre dans l’élaboration d’un ensemble de savoirs, de pratiques, d’institutions et de dispositifs de santé publique. Il s’intéresse à l’élaboration des catégories d’analyse qui en rendent compte et aux débats historiographiques qui en relèvent. Cette année, en s’appuyant sur des recherches récentes, le séminaire présentera trois chantiers prometteurs : la construction locale et transnationale de la santé au travail, les politiques de prise en charge sanitaire dans l’espace urbain, les échelles de la géographie de la santé et leurs effets historiographiques.

Reconstitution - heuristic processes and/or an object of mediation?
Les entreprises de reconstitution ont permis d’appréhender des phénomènes historiques difficilement saisissables par le seul truchement des archives, de restituer et de mettre en situation des gestes, des objets en mouvement, des processus, des événements disparus. L’histoire des techniques s’est particulièrement intéressée à cette démarche sous des formes diverses : maquettes, spectacles, mises en scène, films, que l’apport des outils numériques de la 3D a également enrichis et complétés. Or, ces objets se trouvent au croisement de pratiques assez diverses, tant dans leurs productions que dans leurs usages : alors que la recherche fait de leur élaboration de véritables processus heuristiques, ils sont aussi produits à des fins de valorisation dans des contextes muséaux ou de médiations plus « grand public ».

Women and knowledge: spaces, borders and margins
Cet atelier proposé par des doctorantes du Centre Alexandre Koyré, se veut un lieu de réflexion collective, entre chercheurs, doctorants, et post-doctorants, sur le rôle des femmes dans la production et la circulation des savoirs. Son objectif n'est pas de dresser un à un les portraits de femmes savantes, mais d'aborder par le biais de quelques exemples des problématiques aussi bien méthodologiques que thématiques qui se présentent lors de telles recherches. Pour cette deuxième année, l'atelier questionnera la notion d'espaces.

Powers of Imagination. Historical Approach
The concept of imagination is today seen as as a legitimate object of study, having long been discredited by scientific research. However, in modern and contemporary literature, imagination is generally considered in a negative way, as a mental faculty that can cause disease, error, illusion or sin. By cons, its role was very important, because the imagination formed the necessary link between body and soul. So that was the preferred place to act to perform bodily healing as well as spiritual. We would go against this idea of imagination by studying intellectual tradition and alternative and misunderstood practice. Since the XIIth and XIIIth centuries until the early XIXth century, thinkers and practitioners from a diverse set of disciplines, expressing themselves from different institutional positions, supported the idea that imagination has great powers on the body and on the body and mind of others.

Seminar of the European Research Council Project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world"
The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19th and 20th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.
