  Precious metals in the medieval Mediterranean

  Mining, processing and circulations

  Silver on one side, gold on the other? The medieval Mediterranean was an area in which precious metals were produced and circulated, intertwining three worlds, both friends and foes: Roman Christianity to the West, byzantine Christianity to the East, and Islam to the South. Precious metals (gold, silver, copper and lead), at the origin of numerous objects of the material culture and currencies used by the economies, filled the societies. They were mined, processed, commercialised, controlled and hoarded by a wide variety of stakeholders and institutions, from simple peasants to emperors.

  Clothing in the Middle Ages - from the workshop to the closet

  Le vêtement dans la société médiévale est un bien coûteux. La qualité des étoffes de laine ou de soie est ce qui garantit, en premier lieu, la tenue et la beauté d'un habit. Les grandes foires sont des relais entre les centres de production d'étoffes et les détaillants présents dans chaque ville. Chacun, selon ses moyens, son état et ses envies, fait appel aux drapiers pour lui fournir des étoffes de laine, dont les plus onéreuses viennent de Flandre, et aux merciers et marchands de soie, qui lui propose des soieries communes de premier prix ou des tissages complexes mettant à profit les nouvelles techniques.

  Training the industrial workforce in France

  Actors, contents and territories (late 19th and 20th centuries)

  L’histoire de la formation professionnelle, initiale et continue, se situe au cœur des enjeux de la vie économique et sociale. Objet d’histoire encore largement méconnu dans sa diversité sectorielle et territoriale, le développement du système français de formation professionnelle appelle encore des interrogations nombreuses. Ces journées d’études s’articulent autour de deux axes principaux. Le premier s’intéresse aux acteurs qui s’investissent dans les processus de formation et aux relations qu’ils nouent entre eux. Le second traite de la mise en adéquation entre les contenus de ces formations et le secteur industriel dans lequel elles s’insèrent. Aussi ces journées entendent éclairer les logiques et les enjeux pluriels qui entourent la formation professionnelle dans son ensemble.

  The Emancipation of Bound Laborers in the Americas before the Abolition of Slavery

  What were the modalities of the emancipation of unfree workers? Which factors motivated the adoption of legislation regulating emancipations? Is it possible to establish a typology of the emancipators and of the emancipated servants and slaves? To what extent did slaves and indentured servants take part in their own liberation? Did the introduction of slavery provide any negotiating power to white servants, for instance by reducing their length of service? Did the practice of emancipation evolve in reaction to the advent of abolitionism, especially after the movement gained momentum and radicalized itself?

  Un monde qui va plus vite ? Le point d’interrogation est de rigueur car, entre les propos convenus qui n’hésiteraient pas à répondre « oui » et ceux qui seraient tentés de dire « non », la marge est grande dans laquelle doivent s’insérer les géographes de concert avec les savants des sciences sociales et naturelles. En effet, si la géographie pense d’abord l’espace, le lieu, le territoire ou la région (au sens générique du terme), elle intègre aussi le temps compris comme succession de moments, d’événements et de durées. Le pays invité de ce XXVII^e Festival inetrnational de géographie sera la Belgique. Les propositions d'interventions sur ce pays sont également les bienvenues.
